Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The disclosed embodiments generally relate to transaction cards and methods for manufacturing transaction cards. The transaction card may include a first card component having a first surface and a first structural feature associated with the first surface. The transaction card may also include a second card component separate from the first card component and attachable thereto. The second card component may include a second surface and a second structural feature associated with the second surface. The first and second structural features may be configured to interconnect.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A transaction card, comprising: a first card component and a second card component forming a frame of the transaction card; the first card component comprising an interior surface and an exterior surface, the exterior surface forming a first side of the transaction card; the second card component comprising an interior surface and an exterior surface, the exterior surface forming a second side of the transaction card; a first structural feature and a second structural feature disposed between the first card component and the second card component, wherein the first card component is disposed with a space defined within the second card component and the first and second structural features interconnect to secure the first card component to the second card component. 2. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein: the first structural feature comprises protrusions extending from the interior surface of the first card component; and the second structural feature comprises recesses along the interior surface of the second card component receiving the protrusions. 3. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first and second structural features interconnect by a tongue and groove connection. 4. The transaction card of claim 1 , further comprising a first bracing layer between the first card component and the second card component. 5. The transaction card of claim 4 , wherein: the first bracing layer is affixed to the interior surface of the first card component, and the first structure feature is disposed on the first bracing layer. 6. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first structural feature further comprises protrusions and the second structural feature further comprises recesses, wherein the interconnected first structure feature and second structure feature form a plurality of gaps between the protrusions and the recesses when interconnected. 7. The transaction card of claim 6 , further comprising an adhesive material disposed within the plurality of gaps. 8. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first card component or the second card component is configured to support a transaction component. 9. The transaction card of claim 8 , wherein the transaction component is a microchip. 10. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first card component further comprises a window configured to support a transaction component therein. 11. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first structural feature further comprises protrusions extending from the interior surface of the first card component and the second structural feature further comprises recesses extending into the interior surface of the second card component, wherein the interconnected first structure feature and second structure feature form a plurality of gaps between the protrusions and the recesses when interconnected. 12. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first card component and second card component comprise different materials. 13. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first structural feature comprises a plurality of projections having a rounded distal end, and the second structural feature comprises a plurality of recesses having a rounded cavity. 14. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first structural feature comprises a plurality of projections having a chamfered distal end, and the second structural feature comprises a plurality of recesses receiving the projections. 15. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first structural feature comprises a plurality of ribs separated by a plurality of first gaps. 16. The transaction card of claim 15 , wherein the ribs are attached to the first card component by adhesion, material deposition, or fasteners. 17. The transaction card of claim 15 , wherein the ribs have a draft angle greater than zero degrees. 18. The transaction card of claim 15 , wherein the ribs are disposed substantially coextensively along the interior surface of the first card component. 19. The transaction card of claim 15 , wherein the second structural feature comprises a plurality of recesses separated by a plurality of second gaps, the recesses adapted to receive the ribs when the interior surface of the first card component and the interior surface of the second card component are mated together. 20. A transaction card, comprising: a first card component and a second card component forming a frame of the transaction card; the first card component comprising an interior surface and an exterior surface, the exterior surface of the first card component forming a first side of the transaction card and the interior surface of the first card component comprising a first structural feature; the second card component comprising an interior surface and an exterior surface, the exterior surface of the second card component forming a second side of the transaction card and the interior surface of the second card component comprising a second structural feature; a bracing layer disposed between the first card component and the second card component, the bracing layer comprising a first side and a second side, wherein a third structural feature is disposed on the first side of the bracing layer and a fourth structural feature is disposed on the second side of the bracing layer; wherein the first structural feature of the first card component interconnects with the third structural feature of the bracing layer, and the second structural feature of the second card component interconnects with the fourth structural feature of the bracing layer.
