A process for manufacturing tires for vehicle wheels, comprising the step of building on a forming support a carcass structure comprising at least one carcass ply and, at at least one end edge of the carcass ply, at least one annular anchoring structure comprising at least one substantially circumferential annular insert and at least one filling insert associated to said at least one substantially circumferential annular insert. The step of building the carcass structure comprises the steps of positioning the annular anchoring structure on the carcass ply by moving the annular substantially circumferential insert into contact with an end edge of the carcass ply by means of a special positioning member, pulling down the filling insert on the end edge of the carcass ply and turning up a free end portion of the end edge of the carcass ply so as to form a turned up end portion of the carcass ply including said annular anchoring structure. The pulling down of the filling insert on the end edge of the carcass ply is carried out by a special pulling down member while the substantially circumferential annular insert is retained into a contact position with the end edge of the carcass ply by said positioning member.

The invention claimed is: 1. An apparatus for building a carcass structure of a tyre for a vehicle wheel on a forming support, said carcass structure comprising a carcass ply, and, at an end edge of said carcass ply, an annular anchoring structure comprising a substantially circumferential annular insert and a filling insert associated with said substantially circumferential annular insert, comprising: a positioning member of said annular anchoring structure on said end edge of said carcass ply, said positioning member being movable along a pressing direction; a pressing member comprising a plurality of rollers arranged side by side in a circumferential direction and configured to push said filling insert by exerting thrust on a radially inner portion of a side surface of said filling insert on said end edge of said carcass ply; and a forming member of a turned up end portion of said carcass ply, wherein said pressing member is adapted to act on said filling insert while said positioning member retains said annular substantially circumferential insert in a contact position with said end edge of said carcass ply; wherein each of said rollers is elastically coupled to a thrust member through a respective spring which exerts its elastic action in a direction coincident with its axis only in a respective radial plane of the forming support during pressing of the filling insert, said elastic action exertion direction being different from said pressing direction; wherein the forming member is separately operative from the thrust member; wherein said pressing member is further configured to axially move said thrust member for exerting said thrust on a different portion of said side surface of said filling insert starting from said radially inner portion to continue on a radially outer portion of the side surface of said filling insert with respect to said radially inner portion; wherein each of said rollers is rotatably attached to a respective arm at a roller attachment position, an end of each respective spring is pivotally attached to its respective arm at a fixed position on a respective one of the arms, and an opposite end of each respective spring is attached to the thrust member at a respective spring attachment position; and wherein said thrust member is configured to slide against said positioning member and prior to the sliding of the thrust member against the positioning member, each arm is oriented such that its roller attachment position is nearer than its spring's fixed attachment position to an axis of rotation of the support in a radial direction of the support. 2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said pressing member of said filling insert is controlled by a hydraulic cylinder. 3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said pressing member of said filling insert is removably associated with said positioning member of said annular anchoring structure. 4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein each arm is attached to the thrust member at a respective pivoting axis perpendicular to a respective radial plane of said forming support. 5. The apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein each roller has a concave profile. 6. The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein said concave profile has a predetermined bending radius.
