Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system is described for sending alert messages collected for cloud computing system to external systems. The alert messages may be sent according to determined protocols, such as the syslog protocol and/or SNMP trap, among other appropriate protocols. Partitioning and/or fragmenting of the alert message may be provided based on the use of various types of message identifications and/or other information in which, by virtue of the partitioning and fragmenting, an alert message, regardless of its length, may be sent and reconstructed at the external system. The system advantageously provides for transmission of alert messages using mechanisms other than the syslog protocol and with additional included alert attribute information.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method for sending an alert message from a cloud computing system to an external system, comprising: collecting at least one alert for the cloud computing system; determining a time for sending the at least one alert as an alert message to the external system based at least on content of the alert message, wherein each alert corresponds to at least one of: a compute resource, a network resource, or a storage resource; determining a transmission type of the alert message; preparing the alert message according to the transmission type; partitioning the alert message into a plurality of independent partitioned messages; and sending the plurality of partitioned messages to the external system. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the transmission type includes at least one of: syslog protocol or simple network management protocol (SNMP) trap. 3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the time for sending the at least one alert is determined according to at least one of: (i) manually set by a user, (ii) automatically at periodic intervals, or (iii) in real time after the at least one alert is processed. 4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the alert message includes alert data that includes at least one alert attribute. 5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of partitioned messages includes information that permits reconstructing of the alert message. 6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the cloud computing system includes at least one Vblock and wherein the at least one alert includes a Vblock alert. 7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one alert includes information about a causal relationship between the at least one alert and at least one other alert. 8. A method for sending an alert message from a cloud computing system to an external system, comprising: collecting at least one alert for the cloud computing system; determining a time for sending the at least one alert as an alert message to the external system; determining a transmission type of the alert message; preparing the alert message according to the transmission type; determining that the alert message is not transmissible in unaltered form based on a size of the alert message exceeding a permitted size according to the determined transmission type; partitioning the alert message into a plurality of independent partitioned messages; and sending the plurality of partitioned messages to the external system. 9. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing software for sending an alert message from a cloud computing system to an external system, the software comprising: executable code that collects at least one alert for the cloud computing system; executable code that determines a time for sending the at least one alert as an alert message to the external system based at least on content of the alert message, wherein each alert corresponds to at least one of: a compute resource, a network resource, or a storage resource; executable code that determines a transmission type of the alert message; executable code that prepares the alert message according to the transmission type; executable code that partitions the alert message into a plurality of independent partitioned messages; and executable code that sends the plurality of partitioned messages to the external system. 10. The non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 9 , wherein the transmission type includes at least one of: syslog protocol or simple network management protocol (SNMP) trap. 11. The non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 9 , wherein the time for sending the at least one alert is determined according to at least one of: (i) manually set by a user, (ii) automatically at periodic intervals, or (iii) in real time after the at least one alert is processed. 12. The non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 9 , wherein the alert message includes alert data that includes at least one alert attribute. 13. The non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 9 , wherein each of the plurality of partitioned messages includes information that permits reconstructing of the alert message. 14. The non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 9 , wherein the cloud computing system includes at least one Vblock and wherein the at least one alert includes a Vblock alert. 15. The non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 9 , wherein the at least one alert includes information about a causal relationship between the at least one alert and at least one other alert. 16. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing software for sending an alert message from a cloud computing system to an external system, the software further comprising: executable code that collects at least one alert for the cloud computing system; executable code that determines a time for sending the at least one alert as an alert message to the external system; executable code that determines a transmission type of the alert message; executable code that prepares the alert message according to the transmission type; executable code that determines that the alert message is not transmissible in unaltered form based on a size of the alert message exceeding a permitted size according to the determined transmission type; executable code that partitions the alert message into a plurality of independent partitioned messages; and executable code that sends the plurality of partitioned messages to the external system. 17. A cloud computing system that sends an alert message to an external system, comprising: at least one cloud processing component, wherein the cloud processing component is at least one of: a compute component, a network component or a storage component; and a manager component that includes at least one processor and a non-transitory computer readable medium storing software executable by the at least one processor, the software including: executable code that collects at least one alert for the cloud computing system; executable code that determines a time for sending the at least one alert as an alert message to the external system based at least on content of the alert message, wherein each alert corresponds to at least one of: a compute resource, a network resource, or a storage resource; executable code that determines a transmission type of the alert message; executable code that prepares the alert message according to the transmission type; executable code that partitions the alert message into an independent plurality of partitioned messages; and executable code that sends the plurality of partitioned messages to the external system. 18. The system according to claim 17 , wherein the transmission type includes at least one of: syslog protocol or simple network management protocol (SNMP) trap. 19. The system according to claim 17 , wherein the at least one cloud processing component includes a Vblock, and wherein the at least one alert includes a Vblock alert. 20. The system according to claim 17 , wherein each of the plurality of partitioned messages includes information that permits reconstructing of the alert message.
