A ligation clip applier is provided. The clip applier includes: a pair of jaws; a distal clevis tube to which the jaws are pivotally mounted; a proximal clevis tube located behind the distal clevis tube, wherein the distal clevis tube and the proximal clevis tubes move axially with respect to each other; a clip lock actuator fixed to one of the proximal and distal clevis tubes; and a distal pushrod extending through the distal and proximal clevis tubes and forming a camming connection with the jaws configured to close and move the jaws toward a proximal direction toward the clip lock actuator when the distal pushrod is moved in the proximal direction. A method for applying a clip on a vessel is disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of applying a clip having a pair of legs onto a vessel, the method comprising: retaining the clip in a pair of jaws through engagement between an inclined surface on a distal portion of each leg of the clip and an inclined surface of each jaw; moving a distal pushrod proximally to slide a projection along a slot in at least one of the jaws and to rotate the at least one of the jaws to a closed position; moving the legs of the clip by closing the jaws; moving the at least one of the jaws proximally by urging the projection against an end of the slot; and moving a buttress on the clip to a locking position with a clip lock actuator as the at least one of the jaws continues to move proximally. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising biasing the at least one of the jaws to a distal position with a spring. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising actuating a pivotal handle to move the distal pushrod proximally. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising limiting an amount of closing pressure that can be exerted by closing the jaws. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein moving the distal pushrod proximally includes sliding the projection through a slot in the clip lock actuator. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein moving the buttress includes moving the buttress into a void of the clip. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the buttress is integrally joined to the clip through at least one connector. 8. A method of applying a clip having a pair of legs, the method comprising: retaining the clip in a pair of jaws through engagement with a distal portion of each leg of the clip; moving a distal pushrod proximally to slide a projection along a slot in at least one of the jaws and to rotate the at least one of the jaws to a closed position; moving the legs of the clip by closing the jaws; moving the at least one of the jaws proximally by urging the projection against an end of the slot; and moving a buttress with a clip lock actuator to a locking position with respect to the clip. 9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising biasing the at least one of the jaws to a distal position with a spring. 10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising actuating a pivotal handle to move the distal pushrod proximally. 11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising limiting an amount of closing pressure that can be exerted by closing the jaws. 12. The method of claim 8 , wherein moving the distal pushrod proximally includes sliding the projection through a slot in the clip lock actuator. 13. The method of claim 8 , wherein moving the buttress includes moving the buttress into a void of the clip. 14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the buttress is integrally joined to the clip through at least one connector.
