Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A surgical instrument includes a jaw member having a slot, a first outer surface on a first side of the slot, and a second outer surface on a second side of the slot opposite the first side. The surgical instrument includes an adjunct assembly having an attachment layer including a first section on the first side of the slot attached to the first outer surface, a second section on the second side of the slot attached to the second outer surface, and an intermediary section extending between the first section and the second section, the intermediary section at least partially bridging the slot. The adjunct assembly further includes a first compressible adjunct on the first side and a second compressible adjunct on the second side, the compressible adjuncts spaced apart, the first section attached to the first compressible adjunct, and the second section attached to the second compressible adjunct.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical instrument, comprising: a jaw member, comprising: an elongate slot extending along a longitudinal axis; a first outer surface on a first side of said elongate slot; and a second outer surface on a second side of said elongate slot opposite said first side; and a compressible adjunct assembly, comprising: an attachment layer, comprising: a first section on said first side of said elongate slot, wherein said first section is attached to said first outer surface; a second section on said second side of said elongate slot, wherein said second section is attached to said second outer surface; and an intermediary section extending between said first section and said second section, wherein said intermediary section at least partially bridges said elongate slot; a first compressible adjunct on said first side of said elongate slot; and a second compressible adjunct on said second side of said elongate slot, wherein said first compressible adjunct is spaced apart from said second compressible adjunct, wherein said first section is attached to said first compressible adjunct, and wherein said second section is attached to said second compressible adjunct, wherein said first compressible adjunct extends laterally beyond said first section in a first direction away from said elongate slot, and wherein said first outer surface extends laterally beyond said first section in said first direction. 2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said intermediary section comprises a bar extending along a length of said intermediary section, wherein said bar is stepped up from said first section, and wherein said bar is stepped up from said second section. 3. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein said bar is aligned longitudinally with said elongate slot. 4. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein said bar protrudes into a gap defined between said first compressible adjunct and said second compressible adjunct. 5. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein said bar protrudes into said elongate slot. 6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said intermediary section comprises at least one anchoring feature for securing said compressible adjunct assembly to said jaw member. 7. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said intermediary section comprises a plurality of projections spaced apart from one another. 8. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said projections are aligned longitudinally with said elongate slot. 9. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said projections protrude into a gap defined between said first compressible adjunct and said second compressible adjunct. 10. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said projections protrude into said elongate slot. 11. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said attachment layer comprises a film. 12. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said attachment layer is thinner than said first compressible adjunct, and wherein said attachment layer is thinner than said second compressible adjunct. 13. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first section completely separates said first compressible adjunct from said first outer surface, and wherein said second section completely separates said second compressible adjunct from said second outer surface. 14. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said second compressible adjunct extends laterally beyond said second section in a second direction away from said elongate slot, wherein said second outer surface extends laterally beyond said second compressible adjunct in said second direction, and wherein said second direction is opposite said first direction. 15. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first outer surface comprises a first plurality of pockets, wherein said second outer surface comprises a second plurality of pockets, wherein said attachment layer is positioned between said first plurality of pockets and said second plurality of pockets. 16. A surgical instrument, comprising: a jaw member, comprising: an elongate slot extending along a longitudinal axis; a first outer surface on a first side of said elongate slot; and a second outer surface on a second side of said elongate slot opposite said first side; and a compressible adjunct assembly, comprising: a compressible layer, comprising: a first compressible portion on said first side of said elongate slot; a second compressible portion on said second side of said elongate slot; and a first plurality of bridging portions separated by a plurality of gaps, wherein said first plurality of bridging portions extend between said first compressible portion and said second compressible portion, wherein said first plurality of bridging portions are arranged along a length of said elongate slot, wherein each of said first plurality of bridging portions bridges said elongate slot; and an attachment layer, comprising: a first attachment portion on said first side of said elongate slot, wherein said first attachment portion is attached to said first outer surface, and wherein said first attachment portion is attached to said first compressible portion; a second attachment portion on said second side of said elongate slot, wherein said second attachment portion is attached to said second outer surface, and wherein said second attachment portion is attached to said second compressible portion; and a second plurality of bridging portions separated by said plurality of gaps, wherein said second plurality of bridging portions extend between said first attachment portion and said second attachment portion, wherein said second plurality of bridging portions are arranged along said length of said elongate slot, and wherein each of said second plurality of bridging portions bridges said elongate slot. 17. The surgical instrument of claim 16 , wherein said attachment layer comprises a film. 18. The surgical instrument of claim 16 , wherein said attachment layer is thinner than said compressible layer.
