A vehicle includes a transmission having a first neutral with a first combination of engaged clutches and a second neutral with a second combination of engaged clutches. The first neutral has more engaged clutches than the second. A controller is programmed to, in response to a request to shift from a drive gear to the first neutral and a clutch of the drive gear being failed-on, shift to the second neutral.

What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle comprising: a transmission including a drive gear ratio (drive) established by a set of engaged clutches, a first neutral established by releasing a first clutch of the set, and a second neutral established by releasing the first clutch and a second clutch of the set; and a controller programmed to (i) command a shift from drive to the first neutral, and (ii) command a shift from drive to the second neutral in response to slip not being detected on the first clutch. 2. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further programmed to command shifting directly from drive to the second neutral in response to a previously detected clutch failure. 3. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further programmed to command shifting directly from drive to the second neutral in response to temperature of the transmission being below a threshold temperature. 4. The vehicle of claim 1 further comprising an engine coupled to the transmission, wherein the controller is further programmed to command shifting directly from drive to the second neutral in response to temperature of the engine being below a threshold temperature. 5. The vehicle of claim 1 further comprising: an engine; and a torque converter connected to the engine and the transmission, wherein the controller is further programmed to command shifting directly from drive to the second neutral in response to a soak time of the torque converter exceeding a threshold time and a run time of the engine being less than a second threshold time. 6. The vehicle of claim 1 further comprising speed sensors disposed in the transmission, and wherein the slip of each of the first and second clutches is detected based on data measured by the speed sensors. 7. A vehicle comprising: a transmission having a first neutral with a first combination of engaged clutches and a second neutral with a second combination of engaged clutches, the first neutral having more engaged clutches than the second; and a controller programmed to, in response to a request to shift from a drive gear to the first neutral and a clutch of the drive gear being failed-on, shift to the second neutral. 8. The vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the controller is further programmed to, in response to a request to shift from the drive gear to the first neutral and slip being detected on an offgoing clutch of the drive gear, shift to the first neutral. 9. The vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the drive gear is established by a third combination of engaged clutches that includes all of the engaged clutches of the first combination plus a single additional engaged clutch. 10. The vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the first combination includes all of the clutches of the second combination plus a single additional clutch that is included in the third combination. 11. The vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the transmission is shifted from the drive gear to the first neutral by releasing a single clutch of the third combination. 12. The vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the transmission is shifted from the drive gear to the second neutral by releasing a pair of clutches of the third combination, wherein one of the pair of clutches is included in the first combination and the other of pair of clutches is not included in the first combination. 13. The vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the failed-on clutch is not part of the second combination of engaged clutches. 14. The vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the controller is further programmed to, in response to a request to shift from the drive gear to the first neutral, release an engaged clutch of the drive gear and, in response to slip being detected on the engaged clutch that was released, shift the transmission to the first neutral. 15. A vehicle comprising: a transmission including a drive gear established by a set of engaged clutches; and a controller programmed to command release of a first clutch of the set to shift the transmission from the drive gear to a first neutral, and command release of a second clutch of the drive gear, responsive to slip not being detected on the first clutch within a threshold time, to shift to a second neutral. 16. The vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the controller is further programmed to, in response to the second clutch being released and slip subsequently being detected on the first clutch, reapply the second clutch to shift to the first neutral. 17. The vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the controller is further programmed to command release of a third clutch of the drive gear in response to slip not being detected on the second clutch to shift to a third neutral. 18. The vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the controller is further programmed to remain in the first neutral in response to slip being detected on the first clutch. 19. The vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the controller is further programmed to command shifting directly from the drive gear to the second neutral in response to a temperature of the transmission being below a threshold temperature. 20. The vehicle of claim 15 wherein the transmission further includes a torque converter, and wherein the controller is further programmed to command shifting directly from the drive gear to the second neutral in response to a drain-back condition of the torque converter being detected.
