Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An interlayer structure having a cellulose ester layer for use in structural laminates is described herein. The cellulose ester layer provides rigidity and support to multilayer interlayers comprising an array of different layers. Due to the diverse properties of the cellulose ester layers, the present interlayers can be useful in producing structural laminates having high stiffness and which possess good optical clarity for a variety of applications, including outdoor structural applications.

What is claimed is: 1. A multilayer interlayer comprising: (a) a polymer layer comprising a polymer blend, wherein said polymer blend comprises: (i) at least one non-cellulose ester resin comprising a poly(vinyl acetal) resin, an ethylene vinyl acetate resin, a polyurethane resin, or an ionomer resin; and (ii) at least one cellulose ester having a hydroxyl content of at least 0.5 weight percent and not more than 30 weight percent based on the entire weight of the cellulose ester, wherein said cellulose ester has a glass transition temperature (“Tg”) of at least 50° C. and not more than 250° C.; and (b) a non-cellulose ester layer; wherein an adhesive coating is interposed between the polymer layer and the non-cellulose ester layer; and wherein said multilayer interlayer exhibits a yellowness index of less than 1.5. 2. The multilayer interlayer of claim 1 , further comprising a second non-cellulose ester layer, wherein said polymer layer is at least partially interposed between said non-cellulose ester layer and said second non-cellulose ester layer. 3. The multilayer interlayer of claim 1 , wherein said polymer layer comprises at least 50 weight percent cellulose ester based on the total weight of said polymer blend. 4. The multilayer interlayer of claim 1 , wherein said polymer layer comprises at least 5 phr of a plasticizer. 5. The multilayer interlayer of claim 1 , wherein said polymer layer exhibits a shear storage modulus that is greater than the shear storage modulus of said non-cellulose ester layer. 6. The multilayer interlayer of claim 1 , wherein the cellulose ester comprises at least two different acyl groups selected from acetate, propionate, butyrate, and other acyl groups. 7. The multilayer interlayer of claim 6 , wherein the cellulose ester comprises at least two of acetate, propionate and butyrate groups. 8. The multilayer interlayer of claim 1 , wherein said non-cellulose ester resin in said polymer blend comprises a poly(vinyl acetal) resin. 9. The multilayer interlayer of claim 1 , wherein said polymer blend comprises at least 60 weight percent of said cellulose ester based on the total weight of the polymer blend. 10. A multilayer interlayer comprising: (a) a polymer layer comprising a polymer blend, wherein said polymer blend comprises: (i) at least one non-cellulose ester resin comprising a poly(vinyl acetal) resin, an ethylene vinyl acetate resin, a polyurethane resin, or an ionomer resin; and (ii) at least one cellulose ester; wherein said polymer layer has a glass transition temperature (Tg) of at least 50° C., and wherein said polymer blend comprises at least 50 weight percent cellulose ester based on the total weight of said polymer blend; and (b) a non-cellulose ester layer. 11. The multilayer interlayer of claim 10 , wherein said polymer layer exhibits a shear storage modulus that is greater than the shear storage modulus of said non-cellulose ester layer. 12. The multilayer interlayer of claim 10 , wherein the cellulose ester comprises at least two different acyl groups selected from acetate, propionate, butyrate, and other acyl groups. 13. The multilayer interlayer of claim 12 , wherein the cellulose ester comprises at least two of acetate, propionate and butyrate groups. 14. The multilayer interlayer of claim 10 , wherein said non-cellulose ester resin in said polymer blend comprises a poly(vinyl acetal) resin. 15. The multilayer interlayer of claim 10 , wherein said polymer blend comprises at least 60 weight percent of said cellulose ester based on the total weight of the polymer blend. 16. The multilayer interlayer of claim 10 , wherein said non-cellulose ester layer comprises said poly(vinyl acetal) resin, wherein said poly(vinyl acetal) resin comprises polyvinyl butyral. 17. A method for producing a multilayer interlayer, said method comprising: (a) forming a first layer comprising a polymer blend, wherein said polymer blend comprises (i) at least a non-cellulose ester resin comprising a poly(vinyl acetal) resin, an ethylene vinyl acetate resin, a polyurethane resin, or an ionomer resin; and (ii) at least one cellulose ester; (b) forming a second layer comprising a non-cellulose ester layer; and (c) contacting said first layer with said second layer to form said interlayer. 18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising modifying said cellulose ester prior to said forming of step (b). 19. The method of claim 17 , wherein said forming of step (a) and/or said forming of step (b) comprises an extrusion process. 20. The method of claim 19 , wherein said forming of step (a) and said forming of step (b) occur simultaneously.
