Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A prosthetic valve assembly includes an annular frame having an inner radial surface, an outer radial surface, and defining an inner lumen. The prosthetic valve assembly further includes a leaflet assembly including at least one leaflet having an inner radial surface and an outer radial surface. The at least one leaflet is disposed at least partially within the inner lumen of the annular frame. The prosthetic valve assembly includes a crimping accessory device having a handle and at least one shielding member removably disposed between the outer radial surface of the at least one leaflet and the inner radial surface of the annular frame. The at least one shielding member is configured to reduce physical contact between the at least one leaflet and the inner radial surface of the annular frame.

We claim: 1. An assembly comprising: a prosthetic valve comprising a radially expandable and compressible annular frame, the annular frame comprising an inner surface, an outer surface, and a plurality of struts, the plurality of struts defining openings in the annular frame, the prosthetic valve further comprising a leaflet assembly supported inside the annular frame, the leaflet assembly comprising a plurality of leaflets, each having an inner surface and an outer surface; and a crimping accessory device, the crimping accessory device comprising a handle and at least one shielding member, the at least one shielding member being sized and shaped to be placed into a space between the outer surface of at least one of the leaflets and the inner surface of the annular frame, thereby reducing the amount of physical contact between the at least one of the leaflets and the inner surface of the annular frame when the prosthetic valve is radially compressed from an expanded state to a radially compressed state, the at least one shielding member further being sized and shaped to prevent the at least one of the leaflets from protruding through openings of the frame when the prosthetic valve is radially compressed. 2. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one shielding member comprises a plurality of shielding members equal to the number of leaflets, each shielding member being sized and shaped to be placed into respective spaces between the outer surfaces of the leaflets and the inner surface of the frame. 3. The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of shielding members are connected to the handle at respective first ends of the shielding members and extend axially and radially outwardly from the handle to respective second ends of the shielding members. 4. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one shielding member is sized and shaped to cover substantially the entire outer surface of the at least one of the leaflets. 5. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one shielding member comprises an elastomeric material. 6. The crimping assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one shielding member is inflatable with a fluid. 7. An assembly comprising: a prosthetic valve comprising a radially expandable and compressible annular frame, the annular frame comprising an inner surface and an outer surface, the prosthetic valve further comprising a leaflet assembly supported inside the annular frame, the leaflet assembly comprising a plurality of leaflets, each having an inner surface and an outer surface; and a crimping accessory device, the crimping accessory device comprising a handle and at least one shielding member, the at least one shielding member being sized and shaped to be placed into a space between the outer surface of at least one of the leaflets and the inner surface of the annular frame, thereby reducing the amount of physical contact between the at least one of the leaflets and the inner surface of the annular frame when the prosthetic valve is radially compressed from an expanded state to a radially compressed state, the at least one shielding member further being sized and shaped to cover substantially the entire outer surface of the at least one of the leaflets. 8. The assembly of claim 7 , wherein the at least one shielding member comprises a plurality of shielding members equal to the number of leaflets, each shielding member being sized and shaped to be placed into respective spaces between the outer surfaces of the leaflets and the inner surface of the frame. 9. The assembly of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of shielding members are connected to the handle at respective first ends of the shielding members and extend axially and radially outwardly from the handle to respective second ends of the shielding members. 10. A method for compressing a prosthetic valve comprising a compressible annular frame, the annular frame comprising an inner surface, an outer surface, and a plurality of struts, the plurality of struts defining openings in the annular frame, and a leaflet assembly mounted inside of the frame, the leaflet assembly comprising a plurality of leaflets, each having an inner surface and an outer surface, the method comprising: inserting at least one shielding member of a crimping accessory device between the inner surface of the annular frame and the outer surface of at least one leaflet of the leaflet assembly, the at least one shielding member being sized and shaped to be placed into a space between the outer surface of the at least one leaflet and the inner surface of the annular frame, thereby reducing the amount of physical contact between the at least one leaflet and the inner surface of the annular frame when the prosthetic valve is radially compressed from an expanded state to a radially compressed state, the at least one shielding member further being sized and shaped to prevent the at least one leaflet from protruding through openings of the frame when the prosthetic valve is radially compressed; radially compressing the prosthetic valve; and removing the crimping accessory device from the prosthetic valve. 11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising, after removing the crimping accessory device from the prosthetic valve, further radially compressing the prosthetic valve. 12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the act of inserting the at least one shielding member comprises inserting each of a plurality of shielding members between the outer surface of one of the plurality of leaflets of the leaflet assembly and the inner surface of the annular frame. 13. The method of claim 10 , wherein radially compressing the prosthetic valve comprises radially compressing a plurality of radially spaced-apart shielding members of the crimping accessory device, each of the plurality of radially spaced-apart shielding members disposed between the inner surface of the annular frame and the outer surface of one of the plurality of leaflets of the leaflet assembly. 14. The method of claim 10 , wherein removing the crimping accessory from the prosthetic valve comprises moving a handle of the crimping accessory away from the prosthetic valve in an axial direction. 15. The method of claim 10 , further comprising inflating the at least one shielding member. 16. The method of claim 10 , wherein radially compressing the prosthetic valve comprises placing the prosthetic valve in a crimping apparatus and radially compressing the prosthetic valve with crimping jaws of the crimping apparatus. 17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the at least one shielding member comprises an elastomeric material. 18. A method for compressing a prosthetic valve comprising a compressible annular frame, the annular frame comprising an inner surface, an outer surface, and a plurality of struts, the plurality of struts defining openings in the annular frame, and a leaflet assembly mounted inside of the frame, the leaflet assembly comprising a plurality of leaflets, each having an inner surface and an outer surface, the method comprising: placing the prosthetic valve in a crimping aperture formed by a plurality of circumferentially arranged jaws; inserting each of a plurality of shielding members of a crimping accessory device between the inner surface of the annular frame and the outer surface of a respective leaflet of the leaflet assembly, the plurality of shielding members being sized and shaped to be placed into a space between the outer surface of a respective leaflet and the inner surface of the annular frame, thereby reducing the amount of physical contact b
