An apparatus for washing and sanitizing elongate rotary brushes used for cleaning fruit, produce, and other food products includes a cylindrical housing ( 14 ), within which is installed a carrier assembly ( 16 ) for supporting the rotary brushes ( 12 ) to revolve around the interior of the housing and also to simultaneously spin the rotary brushes about their individual longitudinal axis ( 18 ). The interior of the housing is divided into separate zones for carrying out the steps of the cleaning and sanitation process. Effluent from the cleaning process is collected in a tank ( 30 ) located at the bottom of the housing. The brushes are conveniently loaded onto and removed from the apparatus ( 10 ) through a side door opening ( 52 ) provided in the housing.

The invention claimed is: 1. A rotary brush washing apparatus for removing particulate matter from and cleaning rotary brushes, comprising: (a) a housing divided into a plurality of zones; (b) a carrier assembly disposed within the housing for supporting a plurality of rotary brushes for revolving as a group the rotary brushes being cleaned about the perimeter of the housing through the plurality of zones and simultaneously spinning the individual rotary brushes being cleaned about the axis of the individual rotary brushes; (c) a cleaning solution applicator for applying cleaning solution on the rotary brushes being cleaned as the rotary brushes revolve about the housing through a first zone and simultaneously spin about the longitudinal axis of individual rotary brushes; and (d) a sprayer for applying spray on the rotary brushes being cleaned for removing the particulate matter from the rotary brushes as the rotary brushes revolve about the housing through a second zone and simultaneously spin about the longitudinal axes of the individual rotary brushes. 2. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the carrier assembly comprises: (a) an upper carrier substructure for carrying and supporting the upper end portions of the individual rotary brushes as the rotary brushes revolve about the housing and rotate about their individual longitudinal axes; (b) a lower carrier substructure for carrying and supporting the lower end portions of the rotary brushes as the rotary brushes revolve about the housing and spin about their individual longitudinal axis; and (c) a first drive for simultaneously driving in unison the upper carrier substructure and the lower carrier substructure to revolve the rotary brushes about the housing. 3. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 2 , further comprising a second drive operating independently of the first drive for spinning the individual rotary brushes about the longitudinal axis of the individual rotary brushes. 4. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein: the housing is generally circular in shape to define a central axis; and the carrier assembly for supporting the rotary brushes rotates about the central axis of the housing. 5. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the carrier assembly comprises: an upper carrier substructure for supporting the upper end portions of the rotary brushes during rotation of the rotary brushes about the central axis of the housing and also as the rotary brushes spin about their individual longitudinal axes; a lower carrier substructure for supporting and carrying the lower end portions of the rotary brushes during rotation of the rotary brushes about the central axis of the housing and also as the rotary brushes spin about their individual longitudinal axes; and a first drive assembly for simultaneously rotating the upper and lower carrier substructures about the central axis of the housing. 6. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the upper and lower carrier substructures are shaped to define circular outer circumferences along which the rotary brushes are mounted for rotation about the central axis of the housing, as well as simultaneously during spinning of the rotary brushes about their individual longitudinal axes. 7. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein the upper and lower carrier substructures are in the form of upper and lower annular rings configured for supporting the rotary brushes in a circular rotation about the central axis of the housing. 8. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 7 , further comprising tie structures extending between the upper and lower annular rings to structurally interconnect the upper and lower annular rings. 9. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 5 , further comprising a second drive assembly operating independently of the first drive assembly for spinning the individual rotary brushes about the longitudinal axis of the individual rotary brushes. 10. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the housing is further divided into a wetting liquid applicator station for a wetting liquid applicator to apply wetting liquid to the rotary brushes as the rotary brushes revolve about the housing and spin about the longitudinal axis of the individual rotary brushes. 11. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the housing is further divided into a sanitizing station for a sanitizer to apply a sanitizing medium to the rotary brushes as the rotary brushes revolve about the housing and spin about the longitudinal axis of the individual rotary brushes. 12. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a wetting liquid applicator for applying wetting liquid to the rotary brushes as the rotary brushes revolve about the housing and spin about the longitudinal axis of individual rotary brushes. 13. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a sanitizing medium applicator for applying sanitizing medium to the rotary brushes as the rotary brushes revolve about the housing and spin about the longitudinal axis of the individual rotary brushes. 14. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising partitions disposed within the housing to divide the housing into separate zones for the cleaning solution applicator and the sprayer. 15. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 14 , further comprising a partition to divide the housing into a separate zone for a wetting liquid applicator for applying wetting liquid to the rotary brushes as the rotary brushes revolve about the housing and spin about the longitudinal axis of individual rotary brushes. 16. The rotary brush apparatus according to claim 14 , further comprising a partition to divide the housing into a separate zone for a sanitizer to apply a sanitizing medium to the rotary brushes as the rotary brushes revolve about the housing and spin about the longitudinal axis of the individual rotary brushes. 17. The rotary brush washing apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a mounting assembly for mounting the rotary brushes to be cleaned to the carrier assembly and releasing the rotary brushes from the carrier assembly after cleaning. 18. A rotary brush washing apparatus for removing particulate matter from and cleaning rotary brushes, comprising: (a) a housing; (b) a carrier assembly disposed within the housing for supporting a plurality of rotary brushes for revolving the rotary brushes being cleaned about the housing and simultaneously spinning the individual rotary brushes being cleaned about the axis of the individual rotary brushes; (c) a cleaning solution applicator for applying cleaning solution on the rotary brushes being cleaned as the rotary brushes revolve about the housing and simultaneously spin about the longitudinal axis of individual rotary brushes; (d) a sprayer for applying spray on the rotary brushes being cleaned for removing the particulate matter from the rotary brushes as the rotary brushes revolve about the housing and simultaneously spin about the longitudinal axes of the individual rotary brushes; (e) a mounting assembly for mounting the rotary brushes to be cleaned to the carrier assembly and removing the rotary brushes from the carrier assembly after cleaning, the mounting assembly resiliently retractable during the mounting and removing of the rotary brushe
