Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A luminaire may include a plurality of different light engines. Light engines having different light distributions can be included in a single luminaire and a subset of the light engines selectively driven to dynamically change the light distribution of the luminaire. In this way, a single luminaire is capable of illuminating an area with a variety of different light distributions.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

That which is claimed: 1. A luminaire comprising: a sensor; a first light engine; a second light engine; an initial state where the first light engine emits light for a first distribution and the second light engine emits light for a second distribution; an alternate state where (i) the first light engine emits light for a third distribution such that the third distribution comprises less emitted light than the first distribution and (ii) the second light engine emits light for a fourth distribution such that the fourth distribution comprises more emitted light than the second distribution; and a controller communicatively coupled with the sensor, the first light engine, and the second light engine, wherein: the controller receives input from the sensor to determine whether a trigger event occurs based on the input; and after the trigger event has occurred, the controller changes the luminaire from the initial state to the alternate state. 2. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a particulate sensor. 3. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein: the first light engine comprises inner zone optics that produce an inner zone pattern; and the second light engine comprises outer zone optics that produce an outer zone pattern. 4. The luminaire of claim 3 , wherein the inner zone light pattern and the outer zone light pattern do not overlap. 5. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a rain sensor. 6. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a temperature sensor. 7. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a daylight sensor. 8. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a humidity sensor. 9. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a luminance sensor. 10. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a motion sensor. 11. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises an input for manual control. 12. The luminaire of claim 2 , wherein the particulate sensor detects at least one of dust or fog. 13. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein the trigger event occurs when a variable detected by the sensor surpasses a threshold value. 14. The luminaire of claim 13 , wherein the controller changes the luminaire from the alternate state to the initial state after the variable detected by the sensor decreases below the threshold value. 15. The luminaire of claim 1 , further comprising a proportional state wherein the controller adjusts emitted light for at least one of the first light engine and the second light engine in proportion to a variable detected by the sensor.
