What is claimed: 1. A method of treating alopecia areata in a human in need thereof comprising administering to the human an effective amount of a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor having the following structure: 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alopecia areata is patchy alopecia areata. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alopecia areata is alopecia totalis. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alopecia areata is alopecia universalis. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount of the JAK inhibitor is administered topically. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount of the JAK inhibitor is administered orally. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein administering to the human occurs in a route selected from intra-muscular injection, intra-peritoneal injection, an infusion, intravenous, intradermal, subcutaneous, oral, inhalation, transdermal, topical, transmucosal, nasal and rectal. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the JAK inhibitor is administered to the human in a pharmaceutical composition selected from a solution, suspension, capsule, tablet, pill, troche, nasal spray, suppository, ointment, salve, gel, and cream. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein administering to the human occurs twice daily, daily, weekly, twice weekly, monthly, twice monthly, yearly, 1 time per week, 2 times per week, 3 times per week, 4 times per week, 5 times per week, 6 times per week, 7 times per week, 8 times per week, 9 times per week, 10 times per week, 11 times per week, 12 times per week, 13 times per week, or 14 times per week. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the JAK inhibitor includes an isotope. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the JAK inhibitor includes one or more isotopes of carbon or hydrogen. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises administering a second JAK inhibitor to said human. 13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the JAK inhibitor is the sole therapeutically active ingredient administered to said human for treating alopecia areata. 14. The method of claim 1 , wherein treating alopecia areata is inducing hair growth. 15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the compound is suitable for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). 16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the isotope is a radioisotope. 17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the alopecia areata is patchy alopecia areata. 18. The method of claim 10 , wherein the alopecia areata is alopecia totalis. 19. The method of claim 10 , wherein the alopecia areata is alopecia universalis. 20. The method of claim 10 , wherein the JAK inhibitor is administered topically. 21. The method of claim 10 , wherein JAK inhibitor is administered orally. 22. The method of claim 11 , wherein the JAK inhibitor is suitable for NMR. 23. The method of claim 11 , wherein the isotope is a radioisotope. 24. The method of claim 11 , wherein the alopecia areata is patchy alopecia areata. 25. The method of claim 11 , wherein the alopecia areata is alopecia totalis. 26. The method of claim 11 , wherein the alopecia areata is alopecia universalis. 27. The method of claim 11 , wherein the JAK inhibitor is administered topically. 28. The method of claim 11 , wherein the JAK inhibitor is administered orally. 29.
