Official abstract text for this publication.
A method and system for providing information management of data from hosted services receives information management policies for a hosted account of a hosted service, requests data associated with the hosted account from the hosted service, receives data associated with the hosted account from the hosted service, and provides a preview version of the received data to a computing device. In some examples, the system indexes the received data to associate the received data with a user of an information management system, and/or provides index information related to the received data to the computing device.

We claim: 1. A computer-implemented method for collecting, managing and distributing data and metadata from multiple sources, including data and metadata for a user, the method comprising: receiving the data and metadata from at least one computer of the user and at least one mobile device of the user, and from one or more hosted services to which the user has an account, wherein the hosted services are web-based publicly accessible services accessible via a web browser or a mobile application; associating the at least one computer and the at least one mobile device with the user; associating the one or more hosted services with the user; assigning different information management policies to the data files received from the at least one computer, from the at least one mobile device for the user, and from the one or more hosted services; generating indexing information for a subset of the data files received from the at least one computer, the at least one mobile device and the one or more hosted services; and providing for display the generated indexing information for the subset of the data files, wherein the user may view the indexing information via the at least one computer and the at least one mobile device of the user. 2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising: providing to the user a unified view of the data files across the at least one computer and the at least one mobile device for the user; and synchronizing the data files across the at least one computer and the at least one mobile device for the user. 3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the information management policies include at least one user-defined information distribution policy; and wherein the method further comprises distributing and synchronizing the data files among the at least one computer and the at least one mobile device for the user based on the at least one user-defined information distribution policy. 4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 further comprising: providing a closed corporate collaboration environment wherein the data files are exchanged and synchronized across the at least one computer and the at least one mobile device for the user, using resources of a private information management system, to avoid the data files being exposed to third parties by being stored or controlled by third party data storage sites. 5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 further comprising: permitting an organization to comply with data retention regulations by receiving and managing the user's data files, including the user's data originating from the at least one mobile device; and permitting the organization to respond to unexpected data losses, including the loss of the at least one mobile device or a service outage by the one or more hosted services by actively managing copies of the data files from the at least one mobile device and the one or more hosted services. 6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the information management policies are provided, at least in part, by an employer of the user or by an administrator. 7. At least one computer readable medium, excluding transitory signals, and carrying instructions, which when executed by at least one data processor, performs a method for collecting, managing and distributing data and metadata from multiple sources, including data and metadata for a user, the method comprising: receiving the data and metadata from a set of computing devices of the user, and from one or more hosted service accounts of the user, wherein the hosted services are web-based publicly accessible services accessible via a web browser or a mobile application, and wherein the set of computing devices of the user include at least one computer and one mobile device; associating each computing device of the set of computing devices with the user; associating the one or more hosted service accounts with the user; assigning information management policies to the data objects received from at least one computer and mobile device of the set of computing devices and the one or more hosted service accounts; generating indexing information for a subset of the data objects received from the at least one computer and mobile device and the one or more hosted services; and providing for display indexing information for at least a subset of the data objects, wherein the user may view the indexing information via the at least one computer and mobile device of the user. 8. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 7 , wherein an information management policy assigned to a subset of the data objects received from at least one computing device of the set of computing devices is different from an information policy assigned to a subset of the data objects received from the one or more hosted service accounts. 9. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises: providing to the user a unified view of the data objects across at least two computing devices of the set of computing devices of the user; and synchronizing the data objects across the at least two computing devices of the user. 10. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the information management policies include at least one user-defined information distribution policy; and wherein the method further comprises distributing and synchronizing the data objects among at least two computing devices of the set of computing devices of the user based on the information distribution policy. 11. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises: providing a closed corporate collaboration environment wherein the data objects are exchanged and synchronized across at least two computing devices of the set of computing devices of the user, using resources of a private information management system, to avoid the data objects being exposed to third parties by being stored or controlled by third party data storage sites. 12. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises: permitting an organization to comply with data retention regulations by receiving and managing the user's data objects, including the user's data originating from at least one computing device of the set of computing devices; and permitting the organization to respond to unexpected data losses, including the loss of the at least one computing device or a service outage by the one or more hosted service accounts by actively managing copies of the data objects from the at least one computing device and the one or more hosted service accounts. 13. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the information management policies are provided, at least in part, by an employer of the user or by an administrator. 14. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises: generating the indexing information for at least a subset of the data objects.
