A device for placing a receiving part of a bone anchoring device onto a head of a bone anchoring element includes a holding portion, a collet configured to be held by the holding portion, the collet having a tubular body extending along a longitudinal axis, and a distal end portion configured to be flexibly expanded and compressed in a radial direction, and a plunger configured to be positioned in the collet. The collet is movable axially relative to the plunger between a first position wherein the distal end portion of the collet is configured to have a first width in a first radial direction and the plunger prevents the distal end portion from assuming a width less than the first width, and a second position wherein the distal end portion of the collet is radially compressible to a second width that is less than the first width.

The invention claimed is: 1. A receiving part for connecting a bone anchoring element having a head and a shank to a spinal rod, the receiving part comprising: a top end, a bottom end, and a longitudinal axis extending between the top and bottom ends; an outer wall extending from the top end to the bottom end; and a first inner wall defining a bore extending from the top end to an opening at the bottom end, and a seat adjacent to the opening providing an accommodation space for the head of the bone anchoring element; wherein a rod receiving channel is open to the top end and extends transversely to and intersects the bore, the rod receiving channel forming a second inner wall of the receiving part, wherein the second inner wall is substantially U-shaped and extends from the bore to the outer wall, the U-shaped second inner wall having opposed surfaces with faces that are parallel to one another; wherein the first inner wall comprises an engagement feature for engaging a locking element that is configured to lock the spinal rod in the rod receiving channel, and wherein the engagement feature extends uninterruptedly along the first inner wall from a first end at the top end of the receiving part to a second end spaced apart axially from the top end of the receiving part; and wherein the first inner wall or one of the surfaces of the opposed surfaces of the second inner wall comprises a downward facing surface directed at least partially towards the bottom end of the receiving part for engaging a corresponding feature of a device or tool that is configured to place the receiving part onto the head of the bone anchoring element, wherein at least part of the downward facing surface is positioned axially between the first end and the second end of the engagement feature and is structurally different from the engagement feature. 2. The receiving part of claim 1 , wherein the rod receiving channel further forms a third inner wall of the receiving part that is substantially U-shaped and that extends from the bore to the outer wall on a side of the bore that is diametrically opposite to the second inner wall. 3. The receiving part of claim 1 , wherein the downward facing surface is formed by a recess in the receiving part, where the recess has a top end that is spaced apart axially from the top end of the receiving part. 4. The receiving part of claim 1 , wherein the downward facing surface is formed by a recess at the second inner wall, and wherein other portions of the second inner wall extend between the top end of the receiving part and the recess. 5. The receiving part of claim 1 , wherein the engagement feature comprises a thread, and wherein at least part of the downward facing surface is positioned axially between a first end and a second end of the thread. 6. The receiving part of claim 1 , further comprising an inner cap comprising a flexible head receiving portion configured to resiliently clamp the head of the bone anchoring element, wherein the inner cap is configured to be movably positioned in the bore. 7. A bone anchoring device comprising the receiving part of claim 6 and the bone anchoring element. 8. A system comprising: the bone anchoring device of claim 7 ; and the device or tool comprising: a holding portion; a collet configured to be held by the holding portion, the collet having a tubular body extending along a longitudinal axis, and a distal end portion configured to be flexibly compressed in a radial direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the distal end portion having the corresponding feature configured to engage the downward facing surface of the receiving part; and a plunger configured to be positioned in the collet; wherein the collet is movable axially relative to the plunger between a first position wherein the distal end portion of the collet is configured to have a first width in a first radial direction and the plunger prevents the distal end portion from assuming a width that is less than the first width to maintain engagement between the receiving part and the distal end portion, and a second position wherein the distal end portion of the collet is radially compressible to a second width that is less than the first width to release the engagement between the receiving part and the distal end portion. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein in the first position, the distal end portion of the collet is prevented by a portion of the plunger from being radially compressed to the second width. 10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the plunger is fixedly coupled to the holding portion. 11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the collet is held by the holding portion and is movable relative to the holding portion, and the plunger has a rod-shape and is configured to extend at least partially through the collet. 12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a fixation device configured to extend though an oblong aperture in the collet. 13. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a resilient member configured to be positioned between part of the holding portion and a proximal end portion of the collet, and to urge the collet proximally relative to the holding portion and the plunger towards the first position. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the plunger has a tip configured to be positioned in the distal end portion of the collet when the device or tool is in the first position to prevent compression of the collet. 15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the tip of the plunger has a tapered or conical portion configured to expand the distal end portion of the collet. 16. The system of claim 13 , further comprising an operation portion configured to be positioned at the proximal end portion of the collet, wherein the operation portion is configured to facilitate distal movement of the collet relative to the holding portion and the plunger towards the second position, against the urging force of the resilient member. 17. The system of claim 13 , wherein when the head is held in the flexible head receiving portion of the inner cap while the device or tool holds the receiving part in the first position, a holding force of the inner cap on the head is greater than the resilient force of the resilient member, such that the device or tool is configured to move out of the first position towards the second position while the head remains held by the inner cap. 18. The system of claim 8 , wherein the distal end portion of the collet has two or more flexible tongues extending parallel to the longitudinal axis. 19. The system of claim 8 , wherein the distal end portion of the collet has an engagement feature configured to engage the receiving part. 20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the distal end portion of the collet has two or more engagement features. 21. A method of placing a receiving part of a bone anchoring device onto a head of a bone anchoring element with a tool to connect the bone anchoring element to a spinal rod, the receiving part comprising a top end, a bottom end, and a longitudinal axis extending between the top and bottom ends, an outer wall extending from the top end to the bottom end, and a first inner wall defining a bore extending from the top end to an opening at the bottom end, and a seat adjacent to the opening providing an accommodation space for the head of the bone anchoring element, wherein a rod receiving channel is open to the top end and extends transversely to and intersects the bore, the rod receiving channel forming a second inner wall of the re
