Official abstract text for this publication.
A method and apparatus for securing an electrical connection formed by a mating structure including prongs of a male assembly and receptacles of a female assembly are provided. In certain embodiments, the electrical connection can be secured by frictional engagement between the plug and receptacle housings. This can be accomplished by forcing a wedge into an interface between the housings or expanding a locking element, such as an elastomeric ring, into the interface. Such locking and releasing of the secure connection can be actuated using a locking nut.

What is claimed: 1. An apparatus for use in securing an electrical connection, said electrical connection being formed by a plug including prongs of a male assembly extending from a housing of said male assembly and a receptacle including sockets of a female assembly, wherein said electrical connection is broken by withdrawal of said prongs from said sockets, said apparatus comprising: a plug mating structure of said plug for receipt within a receptacle mating structure of said receptacle; at least one tab structure having a pivoting end opposite a free end and extending outward from said plug mating structure of said plug for receipt within a recess formed on an internal wall of said receptacle mating structure of said receptacle, wherein said tab structure is moveable between a lock configuration in which a portion of said tab structure is disposed within said recess and a release configuration in which said portion is withdrawn from said recess, wherein said pivoting end of said tab structure is disposed further from said housing than said free end and said free end is disposed external to the plug mating structure when in the lock configuration, and wherein said tab structure is biased toward said lock configuration such that said tab structure automatically becomes disposed within said recess when said plug is fully inserted into said receptacle; and a release mechanism comprising a button accessible by a user external to said housing for moving said tab structure to said release configuration to facilitate withdrawal of said plug from said receptacle. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said plug mating structure comprises said prong. 3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said receptacle mating structure comprises one of said sockets, wherein said internal wall defines said one of said sockets. 4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein said tab structure is substantially disposed within said prong when said tab structure is in the release configuration. 5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein said prong is a ground prong configured for grounding an electrical device. 6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein said receptacle is an industry standard receptacle and said recess is formed by a process common to manufacturing of industry standard receptacles. 7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein said release mechanism is operable to rotate said tab structure in response to a user manipulating said button disposed on said plug. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said plug mating structure comprises a wall surrounding said prongs. 9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein said receptacle mating structure comprises a slot extending continuously around said sockets configured for receipt of said wall, wherein said internal wall of said receptacle mating structure defines said slot. 10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said receptacle is an industry standard receptacle and said recess is formed by a process common to manufacturing of industry standard receptacles. 11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said release mechanism is operable to rotate said tab structure in response to a user manipulating said button. 12. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprises a second tab structure extending from a second side of said plug opposite a first side of said plug upon which said tab structure is disposed. 13. An apparatus for use in securing an electrical connection, said electrical connection being formed by a plug including prongs of a male assembly and a receptacle including sockets of a female assembly, wherein said electrical connection is broken by withdrawal of said prongs from said sockets, said apparatus comprising: a plug mating structure of said plug for receipt within a receptacle mating structure of said receptacle; at least one tab structure extending outward from said plug mating structure of said plug for receipt within an aperture passing through an internal wall of said receptacle mating structure of said receptacle, wherein said tab structure is moveable between a lock configuration in which a portion of said tab structure is disposed within said aperture and a release configuration in which said portion is withdrawn from said aperture; and a release mechanism for moving said tab structure to said release configuration to facilitate withdrawal of said plug from said receptacle.
