A method for producing a negative electrode active material for a lithium ion secondary battery, comprising a step of charging either silicon and copper (II) oxide or silicon and copper metal in a pulverization device, pulverizing either the silicon and copper (II) oxide or silicon and copper metal, and simultaneously mixing either silicon and copper (II) oxide or silicon and copper metal thus pulverized. A negative electrode active material for a lithium ion secondary battery is produced by the method.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for producing a negative electrode active material, comprising: a) physically charging elemental silicon and copper (II) oxide in a pulverization device; and b) pulverizing the elemental silicon and copper (II) oxide charged in the pulverization device, wherein the pulverized elemental silicon and copper (II) oxide is also mixed as part of the pulverizing, and using the negative electrode active material as a lithium ion secondary battery. 2. A method for producing a negative electrode active material containing fine particles of elemental silicon having an average crystallite diameter (d x ) measured by an X-ray diffractometry of 50 nm or less, and having elemental ratios, expressed by molar ratios, Cu/(Si+Cu+O) of from 0.02 to 0.30 and O/(Si+Cu+O) each are from 0.02 to 0.30 comprising: a) physically charging elemental silicon and copper (II) oxide in a pulverization device; and b) pulverizing the elemental silicon and copper (II) oxide charged in the pulverization device, wherein the pulverized elemental silicon and copper (II) oxide is also mixed as part of the pulverizing, and using the negative electrode active material as a lithium ion secondary battery.
