Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Electronic content such as an electronic book (e-book) that is referenced in or otherwise related to other content such as website content is identified, and a visual representation of the electronic content is generated. The visual representation is presented in conjunction with the website content, and a reader application for previewing the electronic content is launched via user interaction with the visual representation. Exiting the reader application causes a browser application that is rendering the website content to be automatically returned to a foreground state. A variety of actions are enabled via interaction with the reader application such as purchasing the electronic content, sharing the electronic content, or downloading a sample preview of the electronic content for later consumption.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

That which is claimed is: 1. A method, comprising: determining a subject matter of text on a website; determining a relationship between subject matter described in an electronic book and the determined subject matter of the text on the website; determining in the electronic book a first text portion and a second text portion based on the relationship; determining a first semantic context associated with the first text portion; determining a second semantic context associated with the second text portion; determining that the first semantic context and the second semantic context satisfy a threshold context tolerance associated with the text on the website; causing presentation of the first text portion a first number of times within a user-selectable interface displayed on the website concurrently with the text on the website; determining a first performance metric associated with the presentation of the first text portion the first number of times in the user-selectable interface, the first performance metric indicating a number of user interactions with the first text portion; causing presentation of the second text portion a second number of times within the user-selectable interface displayed on the website concurrently with the text on the website and with the first text portion; determining a second performance metric associated with the presentation of the second text portion the second number of times, the second performance metric indicating a second number of user interactions with the second text portion; determining that the first performance metric exceeds the second performance metric; selecting the first text portion for inclusion in a content card corresponding to the electronic book; and causing a browser application executing on a user device to display the content card on the website in association with the text on the website. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic book is a first electronic book and the website is a first website, the method further comprising: determining that subject matter described in a second electronic book is related to subject matter of text on a second website; determining, using aggregate user consumption data for the second electronic book, that a first text portion of the second electronic book is associated with more than a threshold number of user annotations, highlights, or bookmarks; and selecting the first text portion of the second electronic book for inclusion in a content card corresponding to the second electronic book. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic book is a first electronic book and the website is a first website, the method further comprising: determining that subject matter described in a second electronic book is related to subject matter of text on a second website; determining that a user-generated message corresponding to a user accessing the second website via the browser application comprises an indication of a first text portion of the second electronic book; and selecting the first text portion of the second electronic book for inclusion in a content card corresponding to the second electronic book. 4. A method, comprising: determining a subject matter of website source content; determining a relationship between first electronic content and the website source content based on the determined subject matter; determining in the first electronic content a first portion and a second portion based on the relationship; determining a first semantic context associated with the first portion; determining a second semantic context associated with the second portion; determining that the first semantic context and the second semantic context satisfy a threshold context tolerance associated with the website source content; causing presentation of the first portion a first number of times within a user-selectable interface displayed on the website concurrently with the website source content; determining a first performance metric associated with the presentation of the first portion the first number of times in the user-selectable interface, wherein the first performance metric comprises at least a number of shares of a sample preview of the first electronic content that are associated with a number of times the user-selectable interface is displayed; causing presentation of the second portion a second number of times within the user-selectable interface displayed on the website concurrently with the website source content; determining a second performance metric associated with the presentation of the second portion the second number of times; determining that the first performance metric exceeds the second performance metric; selecting the first portion for inclusion in a visual representation of the first electronic content; and causing a browser application executing on a user device to display the visual representation in association with the website source content. 5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising determining that the at least a number of shares of the sample preview exceeds a threshold. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the determining the first portion and the second portion comprises: determining portions of the first electronic content based on the relationship; and selecting at least one of the first portion or the second portion at random from the portions. 7. The method of claim 4 , further comprising: selecting a third portion of the first electronic content having one or more common text elements with the first portion of the first electronic content when the first performance metric exceeds the second performance metric; causing the third portion of the first electronic content to be presented a third number of times in association with the website source content; determining a third performance metric associated with the presentation of the third portion of the first electronic content the third number of times; determining that the third performance metric exceeds the first performance metric; and replacing the first portion of the first electronic content with the third portion of the first electronic content in the visual representation. 8. The method of claim 4 , further comprising: determining a third performance metric associated with the presentation of the first portion of the first electronic content the first number of times; determining a fourth performance metric associated with the presentation of the second portion of the first electronic content the second number of times; determining that the fourth performance metric exceeds the third performance metric; and replacing the first portion of the first electronic content with the second portion of the first electronic content in a content card. 9. The method of claim 4 , further comprising: determining that second electronic content is related to second website source content; determining, using aggregate user consumption data for the second electronic content, that a first portion of the second electronic content is associated with more than a threshold number of user annotations, highlights, or bookmarks; and selecting the first portion of the second electronic content for inclusion in a visual representation of the second electronic content. 10. The method of claim 4 , further comprising: determining that second electronic content is related to second website source content; determining that a user-generated message corresponding to a user accessing the second website source content via the browser application comprises an indication of a first portion of the second electronic content; and selecting the first portion of the second electronic content for inclusio
