The invention claimed is: 1. A hand vacuum cleaner having an upper end and a lower end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising: (a) a suction motor and fan assembly having a front end, a rear end and a suction motor axis of rotation; (b) an air treatment member having a front end and a rear end and a central longitudinal axis extending between the front and rear ends wherein the central longitudinal axis extends generally horizontally when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end; (c) a pre-motor filter housing having a front end, a rear end, an upper end, a lower end, spaced apart opposed lateral sides extending between the front end and the rear end and an openable door, wherein the pre-motor filter comprises a longitudinally extending filter media having a hollow interior and a longitudinal filter axis, and the longitudinal filter axis is generally orthogonal to the central longitudinal axis; and, (d) a pre-motor filter media provided in the pre-motor housing and removable when the door is opened, the pre-motor filter media having a front side and a rear side wherein the openable door is openable while the air treatment member is provided on the hand vacuum cleaner. 2. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the openable door is provided on the lower end of the pre-motor filter housing. 3. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 2 wherein the openable door comprises a base of the hand vacuum cleaner when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end. 4. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the openable door is provided on the rear end of the pre-motor filter housing. 5. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 4 further comprising a handle mounted to the rear end of the pre-motor filter housing and the door is openable with the handle mounted thereto. 6. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 4 further comprising a handle that is removably mounted to the rear end of the pre-motor filter housing and the door is openable with the handle mounted thereto. 7. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 6 wherein the handle houses at least one energy storage member. 8. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 5 wherein the handle comprises a hand grip portion that extends upwardly and forwardly when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end and the central longitudinal axis intersects the handle. 9. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the openable door overlies a side of the pre-motor filter media that extends in a direction of airflow through the pre-motor filter media. 10. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 9 wherein the openable door is provided on one of the lateral sides of the pre-motor filter housing. 11. A hand vacuum cleaner having an upper end and a lower end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising: (a) a suction motor and fan assembly having a front end, a rear end and a suction motor axis of rotation; (b) an air treatment member having a front end and a rear end and a central longitudinal axis extending between the front and rear ends wherein the central longitudinal axis extends generally horizontally when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end; (c) a pre-motor filter housing having a front end, a rear end, an upper end, a lower end, spaced apart opposed lateral sides extending between the front end and the rear end and an openable door; and, (d) a pre-motor filter media provided in the pre-motor housing and removable when the door is opened, the pre-motor filter media having a front side and a rear side wherein the openable door is openable while the air treatment member is provided on the hand vacuum cleaner, and wherein the air treatment member comprises a cyclone and the central longitudinal axis is a cyclone axis. 12. A hand vacuum cleaner comprising: (a) a suction motor and fan assembly having a front end, a rear end and a suction motor axis of rotation; (b) an air treatment member having a front end and a rear end and a central longitudinal axis extending between the front and rear ends; (c) a pre-motor filter housing having an upper end and a lower end wherein the lower end comprises a bottom openable door; and, (d) a pre-motor filter media provided in the pre-motor housing and removable when the door is opened, the pre-motor filter media having a front side and a rear side wherein the longitudinal filter axis is generally orthogonal to the central longitudinal axis. 13. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 12 wherein the openable door comprises a base of the hand vacuum cleaner when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end. 14. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 12 wherein the pre-motor filter comprises a longitudinally extending filter media having a hollow interior and a longitudinal filter axis. 15. A hand vacuum cleaner comprising: (a) a suction motor and fan assembly having a front end, a rear end and a suction motor axis of rotation; (b) an air treatment member having a front end and a rear end and a central longitudinal axis extending between the front and rear ends; (c) a pre-motor filter housing having an upper end and a lower end wherein the lower end comprises a bottom openable door; and, (d) a pre-motor filter media provided in the pre-motor housing and removable when the door is opened, the pre-motor filter media having a front side and a rear side, wherein the air treatment member comprises a cyclone and the central longitudinal axis is a cyclone axis. 16.
