A dispenser with a replaceable cartridge containing a product to be dispensed, and a housing configured to removably receive the cartridge. The cartridge has a surface that is marked with a first marking, and the housing has a surface that is marked with a second marking. The housing is configured so that, when the cartridge is received by the housing, the first marking and the second marking together form a machine readable code that is detectable from outside of the housing.

We claim: 1. A dispenser comprising: a replaceable cartridge containing a product to be dispensed, the replaceable cartridge having a cartridge surface that is marked with a first marking; and a housing configured to removably receive the replaceable cartridge, the housing having a housing surface that is marked with a second marking; wherein the housing is configured so that, when the replaceable cartridge is received by the housing, the first marking and the second marking together form an optically machine readable code; wherein the optically machine readable code is detectable from outside of the housing. 2. The dispenser according to claim 1 , wherein the housing surface comprises a light-permeable window that is configured so that, when the replaceable cartridge is received by the housing, at least part of the first marking is optically detectable through the light-permeable window. 3. The dispenser according to claim 2 , wherein the light-permeable window is selected from the group of: an opening in the housing surface, a transparent wall, and a transparent panel. 4. The dispenser according to claim 3 , wherein: the product is a hand cleaning liquid, the dispenser further comprising a coupling mechanism that is configured to engage with the replaceable cartridge to fixedly locate the replaceable cartridge inside the housing, with the cartridge surface closely juxtaposed to the transparent wall or the transparent panel, the optically machine readable code comprises a barcode, the first marking comprises a first part of the barcode, and wherein the second marking comprises a second part of the barcode. 5. The dispenser according to claim 1 wherein the optically machine readable code contains data that identifies the replaceable cartridge and the housing. 6. The dispenser according to claim 5 , wherein the optically machine readable code contains data that uniquely identifies the combination of the replaceable cartridge and the housing. 7. The dispenser according to claim 1 wherein the product is a hand cleaning liquid. 8. The dispenser according to claim 7 , wherein: the optically machine readable code comprises a barcode, the first marking comprises a first part of the barcode, and wherein the second marking comprises a second part of the barcode. 9. The dispenser according to claim 8 , wherein the optically machine readable code contains data that identifies the replaceable cartridge and the housing. 10. The dispenser according to claim 9 , wherein the optically machine readable code contains data that uniquely identifies the combination of the replaceable cartridge and the housing. 11. The dispenser according to claim 1 , wherein the optically machine readable code consists of a single code: wherein the first marking comprises a first part of the barcode; and wherein the second marking comprises a second part of the barcode. 12. A dispenser comprising: a replaceable cartridge containing a product to be dispensed, the replaceable cartridge having a cartridge surface that is marked with a first marking; and a housing configured to removably receive the replaceable cartridge, the housing having a housing surface that is marked with a second marking; wherein the housing is configured so that, when the replaceable cartridge is received by the housing, the first marking and the second marking together form an optically machine readable code; wherein the optically machine readable code consists of a single barcode; wherein the first marking comprises a first part of the barcode; and wherein the second marking comprises a second part of the barcode. 13. The dispenser according to claim 12 , wherein the barcode is a linear barcode or a two-dimensional barcode. 14. The dispenser according to claim 13 , wherein the linear barcode is a UPC code and the two-dimensional barcode is a QR code. 15. The dispenser according to claim 12 , further comprising a coupling mechanism that is configured to engage with the replaceable cartridge to fixedly locate the replaceable cartridge relative the housing so that the first marking and the second marking are juxtaposed relative each other to form the optically machine readable code. 16. The dispenser according to claim 15 , wherein the replaceable cartridge comprises a reservoir containing hand cleaning liquid, and the first marking is displayed on a wall of the reservoir. 17. The dispenser according to claim 15 , wherein the replaceable cartridge comprises: a reservoir containing hand cleaning liquid; a pump connected to the reservoir for discharging the hand cleaning liquid therefrom; and a collar connected to the pump, the collar comprising a collar surface; wherein the first marking is displayed on the collar surface. 18. The dispenser according to claim 15 , wherein: the product is a hand cleaning liquid, and wherein the coupling mechanism is configured to engage with the replaceable cartridge to fixedly locate the replaceable cartridge inside the housing, with the cartridge surface closely juxtaposed to a transparent wall or a transparent panel of the housing surface, so that the second marking is superimposed over the first marking to form the optically machine readable code. 19. A dispenser comprising: a replaceable cartridge containing a product to be dispensed, the replaceable cartridge having a cartridge surface that is marked with a first marking; and a housing configured to removably receive the replaceable cartridge, the housing having a housing surface that is marked with a second marking; wherein the housing configured so that, when the replaceable cartridge is received by the housing, the first marking and the second marking together form an optically machine readable code; wherein the first marking comprises a first barcode; wherein the second marking comprises a second barcode; and wherein the optically machine readable code comprises a third barcode that differs from the first barcode and the second barcode. 20. The dispenser according to claim 19 , wherein the first barcode contains data that identifies the replaceable cartridge; wherein the second barcode contains data that identifies the housing; and wherein the third barcode contains data that identifies the replaceable cartridge and the housing.
