Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of forming a conduit having at least one strip-shaped fabric substrate dividing the conduit into channels. The method contains obtaining an extrusion die configured to form the wall of the conduit and a slot configured for receipt of a strip-shaped fabric substrate and introducing a strip-shaped fabric substrate into the slot. The strip-shaped textile is air permeable and contains enlarged regions at the first and second longitudinal edges. Molten polymer is introduced at a first point in the extrusion die and at the first point the slot and the area configured to form the wall of the conduit are not in communication. The slot is exposed to the molten polymer at a point between the first point and the die exit forming the first polymeric layer of the conduit such that the first longitudinal and second longitudinal edges of the strip-shaped fabric substrate embed into the molten polymer.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of forming a conduit having at least one strip-shaped fabric substrate dividing the conduit into channels, the method comprising: obtaining an extrusion die having an exit and defining a flow direction for polymeric material forming the conduit, wherein the die comprises an area configured to form the wall of the conduit and a slot having a thickness, a width, a first edge, and a second edge, wherein the slot is configured for receipt of a strip-shaped fabric substrate, wherein the slot extends in the flow direction along the extrusion die, wherein the thickness of the slot varies along the width of the slot, wherein the thickness of the slot is greatest at the first edge and second edge of the slot; introducing a strip-shaped fabric substrate into the slot, wherein the strip-shaped fabric substrate comprises a first longitudinal edge and a second longitudinal edge, wherein the strip-shaped fabric substrate is selected from the group consisting of a woven, non-woven, and knit, wherein the strip-shaped fabric substrate is air permeable, and wherein the strip-shaped fabric substrate comprises enlarged regions at the first longitudinal edge and the second longitudinal edge; introducing molten polymer at a first point in the extrusion die, wherein the molten polymer forms a first polymeric layer of the conduit, and wherein at the first point the slot and the area configured to form the wall of the conduit are not in communication; exposing the slot to the molten polymer at a point between the first point and the extrusion die exit forming the first polymeric layer of the conduit such that the first longitudinal and second longitudinal edges of the strip-shaped fabric substrate embed into the molten polymer; and extruding the conduit having at least one strip-shaped fabric substrate dividing the conduit into channels out of the exit of the die. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein thickness of the slot varies along the width of the slot in a step function. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the extrusion die is configured to extrude the polymeric material into at least two opposing portions, each of the two opposing portions having a pair of distal edges. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein along the flow direction the slot has an upstream section that is positioned outside of the distal edges and a downstream section that is positioned between the two opposing portions and adjacent to the distal edges. 5. The method of claim 3 , wherein at least two of the distal edges of the two opposing portions of polymeric material each comprise a joining element configured to attach the two opposing portions to form the conduit. 6. The method of claim 3 , wherein each of the distal edges of one of the two portions of polymeric material comprise a joining element configured to attach the two opposing portions to form the conduit. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising a second point for the introduction into the extrusion die of polymeric material forming a second polymeric layer of the conduit. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the second point is located along the flow direction downstream of the first point and upstream of the exit to the extrusion die. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distance between the first longitudinal and second longitudinal edge of the strip-shaped fabric substrate is greater than the inside diameter of the conduit. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the strip-shaped fabric substrate comprises a polymer having a melting temperature greater than the melting temperature of the thermoplastic polymer of the conduit. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the strip-shaped fabric substrate forms at least two flexible, longitudinal channels for enveloping cables.
