A lacrosse head pocket and a related method of manufacture are provided to facilitate consistent, repeatable and/or custom manufacture of lacrosse equipment. The pocket can be constructed from multiple different sections joined with one another, or can be knitted, weaved or otherwise assembled on an automated assembly machine from strands, and/or can be formed as a unitary textile material having regions/sections with different physical and/or mechanical properties. The pocket can be integrally molded within portions of a lacrosse head to eliminate manually constructed connections between the pocket and lacrosse head. The lacrosse head can be integrally molded with a lacrosse handle to provide a one-piece unitary lacrosse stick. Related methods of manufacturing also are provided.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 1. A method of manufacturing a lacrosse head comprising: mechanically manipulating, via an automated pocket assembly machine, of a plurality of strands, utilizing lacrosse pocket data to form a first lacrosse pocket, the lacrosse pocket data pertaining to a three dimensional concave contour of the first lacrosse pocket and a location of an apex of the first lacrosse pocket, the mechanical manipulation including: knitting a pocket outer perimeter in a portion of the first lacrosse pocket with first strands from the plurality of strands; and knitting the three dimensional concave contour with second strands from the plurality of strands; placing the portion of the first lacrosse pocket in a mold cavity corresponding to a first lacrosse head; stretching the first lacrosse pocket in at least one of a lateral direction and a longitudinal direction to attain a stretched state; molding polymeric material to the portion of the first lacrosse pocket while the first lacrosse pocket is in the stretched state so that the polymeric material disperses between individual ones of the plurality of strands within the portion of the first lacrosse pocket, intimately bonding to and between adjacent ones of the plurality of strands; and curing and removing a cured first lacrosse head with the first lacrosse pocket attached thereto from the mold cavity, wherein the first strands are constructed from at least one of an aromatic polyamide and an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, wherein the second strands are constructed from a thermoplastic polymer, wherein the first strands are interlooped with the second strands in at least a portion of the first lacrosse pocket. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the perimeter of the first lacrosse pocket defines a plurality of holes, comprising placing pins joined with a mold through the plurality of holes to hold the pocket outer perimeter of the first lacrosse pocket in an upstanding orientation within the mold cavity so that the molten polymeric material can contact a front surface and a rear surface of the perimeter. 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the stretching includes stretching the first lacrosse pocket over a mold surface so that the first lacrosse pocket is under tension before the placing pins step. 4. The method of claim 1 comprising processing the lacrosse pocket data with a computer so that the computer performs the mechanically manipulating step. 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the lacrosse pocket data is stored in a memory, comprising accessing the lacrosse pocket data from memory. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the automated pocket assembly machine is a knitting machine, and wherein the mechanical manipulation includes at least one of performing circular knitting, tubular knitting, flat knitting, Jacquard knitting, Intarsia knitting, weft knitting and warp knitting on the plurality of strands during the utilizing step. 7. The method of claim 6 comprising: pulling a plurality of strands off a plurality of spools with the knitting machine; and knitting a plurality of substantially identical lacrosse pockets with the knitting machine using the lacrosse pocket data. 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the lacrosse pocket data is utilized a plurality of times to generate a plurality of substantially identical lacrosse pockets joined end-for-end with one another along a lacrosse pocket strip, the joined lacrosse pockets being subsequently separated. 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the pocket outer perimeter extends continuously from a first end of a sidewall near a scoop of the cured first lacrosse head to a second end of the sidewall near a base. 10. The method of claim 9 , comprising molding the polymeric material to the elongated perimeter within the mold cavity so that the pocket outer perimeter is continuously molded to a lower portion of the cured first lacrosse head, embedded within a scoop, a pair of sidewalls and a base of the cured first lacrosse head, wherein the polymeric material is of a thickness 1.5 mm to 4.5 mm where the polymeric material overlaps the pocket outer perimeter. 11. The method of claim 1 comprising repeating the mechanically manipulating, placing, stretching, molding and removing steps to produce a plurality of identical lacrosse heads with corresponding identical lacrosse pockets all attached thereto. 12. The method of claim 1 wherein the molding step includes molding a lowermost portion of a first lacrosse head so that when the cured first lacrosse head is removed from the mold cavity, no structure extends below the portion of the first lacrosse pocket that is molded into the cured first lacrosse head. 13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the lacrosse pocket data is transformed by the automated pocket assembly machine to a plurality of signals, wherein the plurality of signals direct at least one of a needle and an armature to interloop the first strand with the second strands of the plurality of strands during the mechanically manipulating step.
