A vehicle body includes a structural member having an inner surface defining an elongated cavity. The structural member includes an outer panel member joined to an inner panel member. A reinforcement member is positioned in the cavity wherein a gap is provided between the reinforcement member and the inner surface of the structural member. The reinforcement member includes an outer section, an inner section and a tension web interposed between and contacting the outer section and inner section. The outer section faces the outer panel member and the inner section faces the inner panel member. The tension web is secured to the outer panel member and inner panel member. An adhesive secured to the reinforcement member is activatable to expand toward the inner surface of the structural member to define a joint between the reinforcement member and the structural member and to at least partially fill the gap.

What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle body comprising: a structural member having an inner surface defining an elongated cavity, the structural member including an outer panel member joined to an inner panel member; a reinforcement member positioned in the cavity of the structural member wherein a gap is provided between the reinforcement member and the inner surface of the structural member, the reinforcement member including: an outer section facing the outer panel member and having a closed cross-sectional portion, a separate inner section facing the inner panel member, and a tension web interposed between and contacting the outer section and inner section, the tension web being secured to the outer panel member and inner panel member, the closed cross-sectional portion being adapted to increase stiffness and stability to the tension web; and an adhesive secured to the reinforcement member, the adhesive is activatable to expand toward the inner surface of the structural member to define a joint between the reinforcement member and the structural member and to at least partially fill the gap. 2. The vehicle body of claim 1 , wherein the outer section of the reinforcement member includes first and second legs extending outwardly from the closed cross-section portion toward the inner surface of the structural member, the first and second legs defining a lateral load path during a side impact to the outer panel member of the structural member. 3. The vehicle body of claim 2 , wherein end portions of the first and second legs are shaped to conform to respective upper and lower corner portions of the outer panel member. 4. The vehicle body of claim 3 , wherein an end portion of at least one of the first and second legs of the outer section includes a first lobe. 5. The vehicle body of claim 1 , wherein the inner section of the reinforcement member includes first and second legs in contact with and extending from the tension web, at least one of the first and second legs having a kink or bend adapted to control deformation of the one leg during a side impact to the outer panel member of the structural member. 6. The vehicle body of claim 5 , wherein each of the first and second legs of the inner section includes a kink or bend, the kink or bend in each of the first and second legs adapted to allow a section each leg to fold in a vehicle body height direction at least partially into the tension web during the side impact to the structured member. 7. The vehicle body of claim 1 , wherein the inner section of the reinforcement member includes first and second legs extending outwardly toward the inner surface of the structural member, an end portion of at least one of the first and second legs including a second lobe. 8. The vehicle body of claim 1 , wherein the closed cross-sectional portion of the outer section is one of triangular or rectangular shaped, the closed cross-sectional portion abutting the tension web, a side wall part of the closed cross-sectional portion extending substantially parallel to the tension web. 9. The vehicle body of claim 8 , wherein the closed cross-sectional portion is rectangular shaped, substantially horizontal wall parts of the closed cross-sectional portion being at least partially curved toward one another, the substantially horizontal wall parts adapted to at least partially collapse into an enclosed space defined by the cross-sectional portion. 10. The vehicle body of claim 1 , wherein each of the outer panel member and inner panel member of the structural member is hat-shaped in cross-section and includes upper and lower weld flanges, the upper and lower flanges of the outer member being fixedly attached to the respective upper and lower flanges of the inner panel member, wherein an upper portion of the tension web is secured to the upper flanges of the outer and inner panel members and a lower portion of the tension web is secured to the lower flanges of the outer and inner panel members. 11. The vehicle body of claim 10 , wherein the structural member includes a first metal or metal alloy, the outer section of the reinforcement member includes a second metal or metal alloy different from the first metal or metal alloy, and the inner section of the reinforcement member includes one of the first metal or metal alloy, the second metal or metal alloy, a reinforced polymer and a honeycomb structure. 12. The vehicle body of claim 11 , wherein the tension web is formed of the second metal or metal alloy, and further including a separate segment member formed of the first metal or metal alloy, the segment member adapted to connect the upper flanges of the outer and inner panel members to an upper portion of the tension web. 13. The vehicle body of claim 12 , wherein a lower portion of the tension web is provided with a joining part formed of the first metal or metal alloy, the joining part being adapted to connect lower portion of the tension web to the lower flanges of the outer and inner panel members. 14. The vehicle body of claim 12 , wherein the inner section is a honeycomb structure defining a plurality of openings, the adhesive being provided on opposite sides of the openings of the honeycomb structure, the adhesive adhering the honeycomb structure to the tension web, the plurality of openings oriented substantially normal to a longitudinal axis defined by the structural member. 15. A structural reinforcement member for a vehicle body, the vehicle body including a structural member having an inner surface and defining an elongated cavity, the structural member including a first metal or metal alloy, the reinforcement member adapted for insertion in the elongated cavity with a gap between the reinforcement member and the inner surface, the reinforcement member comprising: an outer section, an inner section and a tension web interposed between the inner and outer sections, the outer section including a closed cross-sectional portion having a side wall part spaced from and substantially parallel to the tension web, the closed cross-sectional portion being in direct contact with the tension web, wherein the outer section and the tension web include a second metal or metal alloy different than the first metal or metal alloy, and wherein the inner section includes one of the first metal or metal alloy, the second metal or metal alloy, a reinforced polymer, and a honeycomb structure. 16.
