Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Various embodiments concern fingerprint sensors for mobile devices. By modifying one or more layers of a display assembly, a fingerprint sensor can be positioned directly beneath the display. For example, the air gap within the backlight structure could be replaced by an optically clear adhesive that allows waves emitted by a fingerprint sensor to properly propagate through the display assembly. In some embodiments, a fingerprint sensor is set within a recess in the display assembly. For example, a depression could be created in the protective substrate, and the fingerprint sensor could be set within the depression using an optically clear adhesive. The functionality of a fingerprint sensor could also be replicated by increasing the density of touch-sensing elements in certain areas of a display assembly that utilizes in-cell technology.

The invention claimed is: 1. A display assembly, comprising: a display panel including a first portion having display elements and touch elements, and including a second portion having display elements and touch elements, wherein a number of the touch elements of the second portion is more than a number of the touch elements of the first portion resulting in a touch sensitivity of the second portion being more sensitive to touch interactions than a touch sensitivity of the first portion; and circuitry configured to image a fingerprint as a first type of touch interaction on or above the display panel using the touch elements of the second portion, and configured to determine a second type of touch interaction using one or both of the first portion and the second portion, the first type of touch interaction being different than the second type of touch interaction. 2. The display assembly of claim 1 , wherein a density of touch elements of the second portion is higher than a density of touch elements of the first portion. 3. The display assembly of claim 2 , wherein a density of display elements of the second portion is lower than a density of display elements of the first portion. 4. The display assembly of claim 1 , wherein an arrangement of the display elements and the touch elements in the first portion is in a first pattern, and an arrangement of the display elements and the touch elements in the second portion is in a second pattern, the first pattern and the second pattern being different. 5. The display assembly of claim 1 , wherein the number of display elements of the first portion is different than the number of display elements of the second portion. 6. The display assembly of claim 5 , wherein the number of display elements of the first portion is higher than the number of display elements of the second portion. 7. The display assembly of claim 1 , wherein a density of display elements of the first portion is higher than a density of display elements of the second portion. 8. The display assembly of claim 1 , wherein a display performance of the first portion is higher than a display performance of the second portion. 9. A display assembly, comprising: a display panel having a first portion and a second portion, the second portion having a higher touch sensitivity than a touch sensitivity of the first portion; and circuitry configured to determine a fingerprint of a finger placed on the display assembly using the second portion of the display panel, and configured to sense a touch of the finger placed on the display assembly using one or both of the first portion and the second portion. 10. The display assembly of claim 9 , further comprising: a protective substrate having a first surface upon which the finger can be placed, and a second surface facing the display panel, wherein a first portion of the protective substrate over the first portion of the display panel is a first thickness, a second portion of the protective substrate over the second portion of the display panel is a second thickness, the second thickness being less than the first thickness. 11. The display assembly of claim 9 , wherein the first portion of the display panel includes touch elements and display elements, and the second portion of the display panel includes touch elements and display elements. 12. The display assembly of claim 11 , wherein the first portion of the display panel has more display elements than the second portion of the display panel, and the second portion of the display panel has more touch elements than the first portion of the display panel. 13. The display assembly of claim 11 , wherein the touch elements implement a fingerprint sensor based on capacitive sensing. 14. The display assembly of claim 11 , wherein the touch elements implement a fingerprint sensor based on ultrasonic sensing. 15. The display assembly of claim 11 , wherein the display elements include organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). 16. The display assembly of claim 11 , wherein a density of touch elements of the second portion of the display panel is higher than a density of touch elements of the first portion of the display panel. 17. The display assembly of claim 11 , wherein the touch elements are disposed between the display elements. 18. The display assembly of claim 9 , wherein a display performance of the first portion of the display panel is higher than a display performance of the second portion of the display panel. 19. The display assembly of claim 9 , wherein the second portion is emphasized to differentiate it from the first portion and indicate a location corresponding to the second portion and placement of the finger to determine the fingerprint. 20. A method, comprising: determining that a finger has been placed on a first portion of a display panel, the first portion having a first touch sensitivity; generating a fingerprint corresponding to the finger based on the first portion having the first touch sensitivity; and determining that the finger has been placed on a second portion of the display panel, the second portion having a second touch sensitivity, the second touch sensitivity less sensitive to touch interactions than the first touch sensitivity of the first portion of the display panel. 21. The method of claim 20 , further comprising: processing the fingerprint to determine that the fingerprint is similar to a fingerprint stored in a memory. 22. The method of claim 20 , wherein the first portion has a first display performance, the second portion has a second display performance, the second display performance being better than the first display performance. 23. The method of claim 20 , further comprising: emphasizing the first portion of the display panel over the second portion of the display panel to indicate a location for place the finger to generate the fingerprint. 24. The method of claim 20 , wherein the first portion has a first display performance, the second portion has a second display performance, the second display performance being better than the first display performance. 25. The method of claim 20 , further comprising: means for emphasizing the first portion of the display panel over the second portion of the display panel to indicate a location for place the finger to generate the fingerprint. 26.
