Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The process for making extra high voltage cable insulation is improved by using a composition comprising in weight percent based on the weight of the composition: (A) 95 to 99.9% of an ethylene-based polymer; (B) 0.2 to 2.5% peroxide; (C) 0.01 to 0.5% of a sulfur-containing first antioxidant having at least one —S(CH 2 ) 2 CO 2 R group, wherein R is C6 to C20 alkyl; (D) 0.001 to 0.009%) of a sulfur-containing second antioxidant that does not contain a —S(CH 2 ) 2 CO 2 R group, wherein R is a C6 to C20 alkyl; (E) Optionally, an organic nitrogenous base; and (F) Optionally, a phenolic third antioxidant that does not contain a —S(CH 2 ) 2 CO 2 R group, wherein R is a C6 to C20 alkyl.

What is claimed is: 1. A composition comprising in weight percent based on the weight of the composition: (A) 95 to 99.9% of an ethylene-based polymer; (B) 0.2 to 2.5% peroxide; (C) 0.01 to 0.5% of a sulfur-containing first antioxidant having at least one —S(CH 2 ) 2 CO 2 R group, wherein R is C6 to C20 alkyl; (D) 0.001 to 0.009% of a sulfur-containing second antioxidant that does not contain a —S(CH 2 ) 2 CO 2 R group, wherein R is a C6 to C20 alkyl; (E) Optionally, an organic nitrogenous base; and (F) Optionally, a phenolic third antioxidant that does not contain a —S(CH 2 ) 2 CO 2 R group, wherein R is a C6 to C20 alkyl. 2. The composition of claim 1 in which the sulfur-containing first antioxidant is at least one of dimyristyl thiodipropionate, distearyl thiodipropionate, dilauryl thiodipropionate, and pentaerythritol tetrakis (B-laurylthiopropionate). 3. The composition of claim 1 in which the sulfur-containing second antioxidant is at least one of 4,4′-thiobis (2-t-butyl-5-methylphenol); thiodiethylene bis[3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate; 2,2′-thiobis(6-t-butyl-4-methylphenol); (6,6′-Di-tert-butyl-2,2′-thiodi-p-cresol); and (4,6-bis (octylthiomethyl)-o-cresol). 4. The composition of claim 1 containing an organic nitrogenous base in an amount of 0.001-0.009 wt % based on the weight of the composition. 5. The composition of claim 1 free of polyalkylene glycol. 6. The composition of claim 1 in which the ethylene-based polymer has (i) a melt index (I 2 ) from 0.1 to 100 g/10 min measured according to ASTM D1238, Condition 190° C./2.16 kg and, (ii) a density from 0.910 to 0.940 g/cc measured by the procedure of ASTM D792, Method B. 7. The composition of claim 6 in which the ethylene-based polymer is a low density polyethylene made in a tubular reactor. 8. The composition of claim 1 containing a phenolic third antioxidant in an amount from 0.05 to 0.5 wt % based on the weight of the composition. 9. The composition of claim 8 in which the sulfur-containing second antioxidant does not contain phosphorus. 10. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is not crosslinked and the composition retains from 0.97 to 1.00 of a maximum torque after aging for 7 days at 70° C. 11. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the composition has a dissipation factor of less than, or equal to, 0.038. 12. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the composition has an unaged maximum torque greater than, or equal to, 2.24 in-lb. 13. A cable comprising an insulation sheath made from the composition of claim 1 .
