Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An exercise machine for performing triceps press exercises, including a moving user support that supports a user in a seated position. The exercise machine includes a linkage assembly that allows the moving user support to tilt as the user performs the triceps press exercise. As the user extends his or her arms from an exercise starting position to an exercise ending position, a user support frame—and thus the user's torso—reclines progressively backwards. The user's natural reaction to this reclining sensation is to bring his or her head forward, which encourages the user to plant his or her lower back firmly into a stable position against a back pad and in turn reduces the risk of injury associated with excessively arching of the lower back.

The invention claimed is: 1. An exercise machine for performing triceps press exercises, the exercise machine comprising: a stationary main frame; a connecting linkage assembly pivotally connected to the stationary main frame; a user engagement linkage assembly pivotally connected to the connecting linkage assembly; at least one exercise arm pivotally connected to the user engagement linkage assembly and configured to be moved by a user from an exercise starting position to an exercise ending position; a source of resistance associated with the at least one exercise arm which biases the at least one exercise arm toward the exercise starting position; and a user support frame pivotally connected to the stationary main frame and to the user engagement linkage assembly, wherein the user support frame is configured to support the user in a seated position and includes a seat pad, a back pad, and a footrest, wherein the user support frame is configured to recline progressively backward as the at least one exercise arm moves from the exercise starting position to the exercise ending position, and wherein each at least one exercise arm is directly connected to the user engagement linkage assembly through a single joint operable for swinging rotation of the respective at least one exercise arm about both a horizontal axis and a vertical axis. 2. The exercise machine of claim 1 , wherein the user engagement linkage assembly comprises a forward end that is connected to the user support frame, and the forward end of the user engagement linkage assembly is driven downward and pushes the user support frame in response to the user moving the at least one exercise arm from the exercise starting position to the exercise ending position. 3. The exercise machine of claim 1 , wherein the source of resistance is a selectorized weight stack assembly that is connected to the user engagement linkage assembly by a cable at a cable mount on the user engagement linkage assembly. 4. An exercise machine for performing triceps press exercises, the exercise machine comprising: a stationary main frame; a connecting linkage assembly pivotally connected to the stationary main frame; a user engagement linkage assembly pivotally connected to the connecting linkage assembly; at least one exercise arm pivotally connected to the user engagement linkage assembly and configured to be moved by a user from an exercise starting position to an exercise ending position; a source of resistance associated with the at least one exercise arm which biases the at least one exercise arm toward the exercise starting position; and a user support frame pivotally connected to the stationary main frame and to the user engagement linkage assembly, wherein the user support frame is configured to support the user in a seated position and includes a seat pad, a back pad, and a footrest, wherein the user support frame is configured to recline progressively backward as the at least one exercise arm moves from the exercise starting position to the exercise ending position, and wherein the at least one exercise arm is linked to the user engagement linkage assembly through at least one joint, and in response to the user moving the at least one exercise arm from the exercise starting position to the exercise ending position, a rear portion of the user engagement linkage assembly moves in a same direction as the at least one exercise arm. 5. An exercise machine for performing triceps press exercises, the exercise machine comprising: a stationary main frame; a connecting linkage assembly pivotally connected to the stationary main frame; a user engagement linkage assembly pivotally connected to the connecting linkage assembly; at least one exercise arm pivotally connected to the user engagement linkage assembly and configured to be moved by a user from an exercise starting position to an exercise ending position; a source of resistance associated with the at least one exercise arm which biases the at least one exercise arm toward the exercise starting position; and a user support frame pivotally connected to the stationary main frame and to the user engagement linkage assembly, wherein the user support frame is configured to support the user in a seated position and includes a seat pad, a back pad, and a footrest, wherein the user support frame is configured to recline progressively backward as the at least one exercise arm moves from the exercise starting position to the exercise ending position, and wherein the user engagement linkage assembly is pivotally connected to the at least one exercise arm at a forward portion of the user engagement linkage assembly, pivotally connected to the user support frame at a rear portion of the user engagement linkage assembly, and pivotally connected to the connecting linkage assembly at a middle portion of the user engagement linkage assembly that is between the forward portion of the user engagement linkage assembly and the rear portion of the user engagement linkage assembly. 6. The exercise machine of claim 5 , wherein the middle portion of the user engagement linkage assembly is closer to the rear portion of the user engagement linkage assembly than to the forward portion of the user engagement linkage assembly. 7. The exercise machine of claim 6 , wherein the source of resistance is a selectorized weight stack assembly that is connected to the user engagement linkage assembly by a cable at a cable mount. 8. The exercise machine of claim 7 , wherein the cable mount is positioned on a portion of the user engagement linkage assembly that is between the forward portion and the middle portion. 9. An exercise machine, comprising: a stationary main frame; a connecting linkage assembly pivotally connected to the stationary main frame; a linkage mount assembly pivotally connected to the connecting linkage assembly; a user engagement linkage assembly pivotally connected to the linkage mount assembly; at least one exercise arm pivotally connected to the user engagement linkage assembly and configured to be moved by a user from an exercise starting position to an exercise ending position; a source of resistance associated with the at least one exercise arm which biases the at least one exercise arm toward the exercise starting position; and a user support frame pivotally connected to the stationary main frame and to the linkage mount assembly, wherein the user support frame is configured to support the user in a seated position and includes a seat pad, a back pad, and a footrest, wherein the user support frame is configured to recline progressively backward as the at least one exercise arm moves from the exercise starting position to the exercise ending position, wherein the user engagement linkage assembly is configured to be rotated and locked into a selected orientation with respect to the linkage mount assembly in order to adjust a position of the at least one exercise arm in the exercise starting position and the exercise ending position, and wherein each at least one exercise arm is directly connected to the user engagement linkage assembly through a single joint operable for swinging rotation of the respective at least one exercise arm about both a horizontal axis and a vertical axis. 10. The exercise machine of claim 9 , wherein the source of resistance is a selectorized weight stack assembly that is connected to the user engagement linkage assembly by a cable at a cable mount on the user engagement linkage assembly. 11. The exercise machine of claim 9 , wherein the user engagement linkage assembly is pivotally connected to the at least one exercise arm at a forward portion of the user en
