Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method and a system for producing a change in a medium disposed in an artificial container. The method places in a vicinity of the medium at least one of a plasmonics agent and an energy modulation agent. The method applies an initiation energy through the artificial container to the medium. The initiation energy interacts with the plasmonics agent or the energy modulation agent to directly or indirectly produce the change in the medium. The system includes an initiation energy source configured to apply an initiation energy to the medium to activate the plasmonics agent or the energy modulation agent.

The invention claimed is: 1. A system for producing a change in a medium to be treated, comprising: an energy source capable of producing an initiation energy comprising one or more of x-rays, gamma rays, or an electron beam; a container holding the medium to be treated; an energy modulation agent surrounded by an encapsulation, disposed inside or in a vicinity of the medium to be treated, and separated physically from the medium to be treated by the encapsulation; a plasmonics agent in a vicinity of the medium; and said energy modulation agent comprising a photon emitter which emits at least one of ultraviolet and visible light upon interaction with said initiation energy, wherein said at least one of ultraviolet and visible light stimulates a chemical or biological process in the medium. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the energy modulation agent comprises at least one of a sulfide, a telluride, a selenide and an oxide semiconductor. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein said at least one of ultraviolet and visible light stimulates, for said chemical or biological process, a change in an organism activity of the medium. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein said container comprises at least one of an aluminum container, a quartz container, a glass container, a plastic container or a combination thereof. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein said encapsulation comprises at least one of re-entrant structure extending into the container holding said medium. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein said encapsulation is provided in an interior of the container holding said medium. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein said at least one of ultraviolet and visible light stimulates, for said chemical or biological process, a reduction in contaminants in the medium. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein said medium to be treated comprises a food product to be treated. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein said food product comprises a liquid or fluid product. 10. The system of claim 8 , wherein said food product comprises a non-liquid product. 11. The system of claim 8 , wherein said at least one of ultraviolet and visible light stimulates, for said chemical or biological process, a pasteurization of the food product. 12. The system of claim 8 , wherein said at least one of ultraviolet and visible light stimulates, for said chemical or biological process, a deactivation of a yeast in the food product. 13. The system of claim 1 , wherein said at least one of ultraviolet and visible light stimulates, for said chemical or biological process, a sterilization of a plastic product. 14. The system of claim 1 , wherein said at least one of ultraviolet and visible light stimulates, for said chemical or biological process, a sterilization of an interior of a product. 15. The system of claim 1 , wherein said at least one of ultraviolet and visible light stimulates, for said chemical or biological process, a sterilization of a blood product. 16. The system of claim 1 , wherein said medium to be treated comprises a medical product. 17. The system of claim 1 , wherein said medium to be treated comprises a cosmetic product. 18. A system for treating a food product, comprising: an energy source capable of producing an initiation energy comprising one or more of x-rays, gamma rays, or an electron beam; a container holding the food product; an energy modulation agent surrounded by an encapsulation, disposed inside or in a vicinity of the food product, and separated physically from the medium to be treated by the encapsulation; and said energy modulation agent comprising a photon emitter which emits at least one of ultraviolet and visible light upon interaction with said initiation energy, wherein said at least one of ultraviolet and visible light stimulates a chemical or biological process in the food product. 19. A system for treating an interior of a plastic product, comprising: an energy source capable of producing an initiation energy comprising one or more of x-rays, gamma rays, or an electron beam; an energy modulation agent disposed inside the plastic product; and said energy modulation agent comprising a photon emitter which emits at least one of ultraviolet and visible light upon interaction with said initiation energy, wherein said at least one of ultraviolet and visible light sterilizes the interior of the plastic product. 20. A system for producing a change in a medium to be treated, comprising: an energy source capable of producing an initiation energy comprising one or more of x-rays, gamma rays, or an electron beam; a container holding the medium to be treated; an energy modulation agent surrounded by an encapsulation, disposed inside or in a vicinity of the medium to be treated, and separated physically from the medium to be treated by the encapsulation, wherein said encapsulation comprises at least one re-entrant structure extending into the container holding said medium, or wherein said encapsulation is provided in an interior of the container holding said medium; and said energy modulation agent comprising a photon emitter which emits at least one of ultraviolet and visible light upon interaction with said initiation energy, wherein said at least one of ultraviolet and visible light stimulates a chemical or biological process in the medium. 21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the energy modulation agent comprises at least one of a sulfide, a telluride, a selenide and an oxide semiconductor. 22. The system of claim 20 , wherein said at least one of ultraviolet and visible light stimulates, for said chemical or biological process, a change in an organism activity of the medium. 23.
