Official abstract text for this publication.
A zeolite-containing fixed bed catalyst is formed by pre-shaping a mixture of a reactive aluminum-containing component and a matrix component into pre-shaped particles, and contacting the pre-shaped particles with a reactive liquid containing a silicate for a sufficient time and temperature to form an in-situ zeolite within the pre-shaped particles. The contacting of the pre-shaped particles and the liquid is achieved such that there is relative movement between the pre-shaped particles and the liquid.

What is claimed is: 1. A fixed bed catalyst composition comprising an extrudate, wherein the extrudate has a diameter of from about 0.05 to 0.5 inch and a length of from about 0.05 to 1 inch, and comprises: a macroporous alumina-containing matrix; and a metal having a hydrogenation function; wherein the matrix comprises macropores having zeolite Y crystallized on walls of the macropores. 2. The fixed bed catalyst composition of claim 1 , wherein the matrix comprises kaolin that has been calcined through its characteristic exotherm. 3. The fixed bed catalyst composition of claim 1 , wherein the metal having the hydrogenation function is selected from the group consisting of palladium, platinum chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, cobalt and nickel. 4. The fixed bed catalyst composition of claim 1 , wherein the extrudate has a diameter of about 1/16th inch. 5. The fixed bed catalyst composition of claim 1 , wherein the extrudate comprises at least 10 to 65 percent by weight of crystallized-zeolite Y. 6. The fixed bed catalyst composition of claim 1 , wherein the extrudate is treated to remove sodium ions from the crystallized zeolite Y. 7. The fixed bed catalyst composition of claim 1 , wherein the matrix comprises spinel, mullite, or alumina.
