A personal protection system for providing a sterile barrier around medical/surgical personnel. The system includes a helmet over which a hood or a toga suspended. A microphone, an amplifier and a speaker are mounted to the helmet. Speech of the individual wearing the personal protection system is picked up by the microphone and amplified speech is broadcast by the speaker. The speaker is outwardly directed so as to broadcast the speech out through the hood or toga covering the helmet.

What is claimed is: 1. A personal protection system configured to be at least partially disposed over a head of an individual, said system comprising: a head unit comprising a head band, said head band configured to extend around the head of the individual wearing said head unit; a fan housing mounted to the head band, said fan housing comprising: a base that is located adjacent the head of the individual wearing the head unit, said base being curved along a longitudinal axis that extends from a front of the head to a rear of the head so as to approximate the shape of the individual's head; a void space, said void space at least partially defined by said fan housing base; and an outlet opening; and an inlet opening; a fan rotatably disposed in the void space of said fan housing, said fan comprising: a center; a fan base that extends circumferentially around said center, wherein said fan base is shaped so, extending inwardly from an outer perimeter of said fan base towards the center of said fan, said fan base extends upwardly; and a plurality of blades that extend upwardly from said fan base, wherein said fan and said fan housing are constructed so that, upon rotation of said fan, said fan draws air in through said inlet opening and forces air out of said outlet opening of said fan housing; at least one nozzle connected to said fan housing for receiving air forced out of said outlet opening of said fan housing and through which the air is discharged; and a hood comprising a transparent face shield. 2. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein said fan housing includes a lid that is secured to said fan housing base and is disposed over said fan; and wherein said lid is shaped to be curved along a longitudinal axis that extends from proximate the front of the head to proximate the rear of the head so as to approximate the shape of the individual's head. 3. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein: said head band has opposed front and rear sections; and said fan housing is mounted to said head band so that said fan housing can be adjustably positioned between the front and rear sections of said head band. 4. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein said head unit and said hood are formed with complementary features that releasably engage to releasably secure said hood to said head unit, so that when said hood is secured to said head unit, said transparent face shield is located in front of the head of the individual. 5. The personal protection system of claim 4 , wherein: said head unit further comprises a face frame; said feature of said head unit for releasably securing said hood is a post that is connected to said face frame; and said feature of said hood for releasably securing said hood comprises at least one opening formed in said transparent face shield of said hood that is dimensioned to receive said at least one post, wherein said at least one post and said at least one opening in said transparent face shield are collectively positioned so that the insertion of said post into the opening releasably secures said hood to said head unit so that said transparent face shield is located in front of the head of the individual. 6. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein said at least one nozzle is positioned so that air discharged through said at least one nozzle is discharged forward of the front of the head of the individual. 7. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein: said fan housing is formed with a first and a second outlet opening through which said fan discharges air; said at least one nozzle comprises a first nozzle and a second nozzle that are each connected to said fan housing; and wherein said first said nozzle is connected to said fan housing to receive air forced out through said first outlet opening in said fan housing and is positioned so that the air discharged from said first nozzle is discharged forward the head of the individual and said second nozzle is connected to said fan housing to receive air forced out through said second outlet opening and is positioned so the air discharged from said second nozzle is discharged rearward of the head of the individual. 8. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein: said head band has spaced apart front and rear sections; said fan housing is formed with a first outlet and a second outlet opening through which said fan discharges air; said at least one nozzle comprises a first nozzle and a second nozzle that are each connected to said fan housing; wherein said first said nozzle is mounted to said head band so as to be located forward of the front section of said head band and said second nozzle is mounted to said head band so as to be located rearward of the rear section of said head band; a support extends upwardly from said head band to said fan housing for supporting said fan housing above the head of the individual; a fastening assembly integral with said fan housing to said support at a plurality of different locations along said support so that the position of said fan housing relative to both said first nozzle and said second nozzle can be adjusted; a first conduit extends between said first outlet of said fan housing and said first nozzle, said first conduit being adjustable in at least one of length or angle so that, when the position of said fan housing relative to said first nozzle is adjusted, said first conduit maintains a connection between said fan housing and said first nozzle; and a second conduit that extends between said second outlet of said fan housing and said second nozzle, said second conduit being adjustable in at least one of length or angle so that, when the position of said fan housing relative to said second nozzle is adjusted, said second conduit maintains a connection between said fan housing and said second nozzle. 9. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein: said fan housing is further formed to have a boss that extends outwardly from said base of said fan housing; and said fan is rotatably mounted to said boss of said fan housing. 10. The personal protection system of claim 1 , wherein said head unit further comprises a motor disposed in the void space of said fan housing, said motor connected to said fan for rotating said fan. 11. A helmet for use as a part of a personal protection system that is configured to be at least partially disposed over a head of an individual, said helmet including: a head band shaped to be worn around the head of the individual, said head band having a front section worn proximate the front of the head of the individual and a rear section opposite said front section; a fan housing mounted to the head band, said fan housing comprising: a base that is located adjacent the head and that is shaped to be curved along a longitudinal axis that extends from a front of the head to a rear of the head so as to approximate the shape of the head; a lid that is secured to said fan housing base and that is spaced away from said fan housing base so as to define a void space between said base and said lid, wherein said lid is shaped to be curved along a longitudinal axis that extends from a front of the head to a rear of the head so as to approximate the shape of the head; at least one outlet opening; and an inlet opening; a fan rotatably disposed in the void space of said fan housing, said fan comprising: a center; a fan base that extends circumferentially around the center, wherein said fan base is shaped so, extending inwardly from an outer perimeter of said fan base towards the center of said fan, said fan base extends upwardly; and a plurality of blades that ex
