Official abstract text for this publication.
A controlling device having an activity mode corresponding to a controllable activity in which activation of a command key within a logical group of command keys of the controlling device causes a transmission of command data to control one or more functional operations of an intended target appliance. For a controllable activity the controlling device has a memory in which is stored a plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings. To configure the controlling device for the controllable activity one or more predetermined keys of the controlling device are activated to thereby designate one or more intended target appliances for the controllable activity. When the controlling device is then placed into the activity mode corresponding to the controllable activity, the controlling device will use the configuration to select one of the plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings to determine which appliance command data to transmit in response to an activation of a command key within a logical group of command keys.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for configuring a controlling device having an activity mode corresponding to a controllable activity in which activation of a command key within a logical group of command keys of the controlling device causes a transmission of command data to control one or more functional operations of an intended target appliance, the method comprising: storing in a memory of the controlling device a plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings for the controllable activity; receiving, via one or more activations of predetermined keys of the controlling device, input to designate a plurality of appliances in an intended target appliances to controllable activity assignment; using by the controlling device the intended target appliances to controllable activity assignment to select one of the plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings; and causing the controlling device to use an appliance command data set appropriate for use in controlling functional operations of a selected one of the plurality of designated appliances when the controlling device is caused to transmit command data in response to an activation of a command key within a logical group of command keys when the controlling device is placed into the activity mode corresponding to the controllable activity wherein the one of the plurality of designated appliances is selected as a function of the selected one of the plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings. 2. The method as recited in claim 1 , comprising placing the controlling device into the activity mode corresponding to the controllable activity in response to activation of an activity selection key of the controlling device assigned to the activity mode corresponding to the controllable activity. 3. The method as recited in claim 2 , comprising causing the controlling device to execute a macro command sequence in response to activation of the activity selection key of the controlling device assigned to the activity mode corresponding to the controllable activity when activated to place the controlling device into the activity mode corresponding to the controllable activity. 4. The method as recited in claim 1 , comprising placing the controlling device into a configuration state wherein the one or more activations of predetermined keys of the controlling device function to designate one or more of the plurality of appliances in the intended target appliances to controllable activity assignment. 5. The method as recited in claim 4 , wherein activation of an activity selection key of the controlling device assigned to the activity mode corresponding to the controllable activity for a predetermined period of time functions to place the controlling device into the configuration state. 6. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the predetermined keys of the controlling device comprise appliance selection keys of the controlling device. 7. The method as recited in claim 1 , comprising illuminating one or more of the predetermined keys to indicate appliances in the intended target appliances to controllable activity assignment. 8. The method as recited in claim 7 , wherein the predetermined keys of the controlling device comprise appliance selection keys of the controlling device. 9. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of appliances in the intended target appliances to controllable activity assignment includes at least one default appliance that was pre-configured in the intended target appliances to controllable activity assignment. 10. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings is maintained in a table stored in memory. 11. The method as recited in claim 10 , comprising using the intended target appliances to controllable activity assignment to access the table stored in memory to thereby select one of the plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings when the controlling device is placed into the activity mode corresponding to the controllable activity. 12. The method as recited in claim 1 , comprising using the intended target appliances to controllable activity assignment to determine which appliance command data to transmit in response to an activation of a power control command key of the controlling device. 13. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings includes plural mappings wherein an appliance is mapped to volume control command keys, an appliance is mapped to channel control command keys, an appliance is mapped to transport control command keys, and an appliance is mapped to navigation control command keys. 14. A method for configuring a controlling device having an activity mode corresponding to a controllable activity in which activation of a command key within a logical group of command keys of the controlling device causes a transmission of to command data to control one or more functional operations of an intended target appliance, the method comprising: receiving, via one or more activations of predetermined keys of the controlling device, input to designate a plurality of appliances in an intended target appliances to controllable activity assignment; and causing the controlling device to use an appliance command data set appropriate for use in controlling functional operations of a selected one of the plurality of designated appliances when the controlling device is caused to transmit command data in response to an activation of a power control command key of the controlling device when the controlling device is placed into the activity mode corresponding to the controllable activity wherein the one of the plurality of designated appliances is selected as a function of the selected one of the plurality of predetermined appliance to logical group of command keys mappings. 15. The method as recited in claim 14 , wherein the predetermined keys of the controlling device comprise appliance selection keys of the controlling device. 16. The method as recited in claim 14 , comprising illuminating one or more of the predetermined keys to indicate appliances in the intended target appliances to controllable activity assignment. 17. The method as recited in claim 16 , wherein the predetermined keys of the controlling device comprise appliance selection keys of the controlling device.
