The invention claimed is: 1. A cannabinoid-rich extract which is substantially free of volatile terpenes and ballast, and has a high content of cannabidiol (CBD) and only trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), and wherein the majority of the cannabinoids are present in the decarboxylated neutral form. 2. The cannabinoid-rich extract as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said extract has a profile by gas chromatographic analysis that comprises peaks as defined by retention times in one of the following sets of peaks: (1) 35.7±1 minute (CBD); (2) 24.1±1 minute, 35.9±1 minute (CBD), and 49.7±1 minute; (3) 32.1±1 minute, 35.7±1 minute (CBD), and 43.5±1 minute; or (4) 35.7±1 minute (CBD), and 45.8±1 minute. 3. The cannabinoid-rich extract as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said extract has a profile by gas chromatographic analysis that comprises peaks as defined by the following retention times: 32.1±1 minute, 35.7±1 minute (CBD), and 43.5±1 minute. 4. The cannabinoid-rich extract as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said extract comprises about 98% (w/w) cannabidiol (CBD), 1.5% (w/w) tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), 0.5% (w/w) cannabinol (CBN) and only trace amounts of ballast. 5. The cannabinoid-rich extract as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said extract is substantially free of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
