Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An apparatus includes a first wireless bridge device configured to transmit signals to and receive signals from wireless network access points located along a pathway, and a second wireless bridge device configured to transmit signals to and receive signals from the wireless network access points. The first wireless bridge device and the second wireless bridge device are coupled to and communicate with each other. When the first wireless bridge device is wirelessly connected to a first access point and about to initiate a roaming mode to attempt to wirelessly connect to a second access point, the first wireless bridge device notifies the second wireless bridge device of the initiating of the roaming mode and determines whether the second wireless bridge device is in the roaming mode while the apparatus is moving along the pathway.

What is claimed is: 1. An apparatus comprising: a first wireless bridge device configured to transmit signals to and receive signals from wireless network access points located along a pathway; and a second wireless bridge device configured to transmit signals to and receive signals from the wireless network access points, the first wireless bridge device and the second wireless bridge device being coupled to and in communication with each other so that when the first wireless bridge device is wirelessly connected to a first access point and about to initiate a roaming mode to attempt to wirelessly connect to a second access point, the first wireless bridge device notifies the second wireless bridge device of the initiating of the roaming mode and determines whether the second wireless bridge device is in the roaming mode while the apparatus is moving along the pathway. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising: a switch coupled to the first wireless bridge device and to the second wireless bridge device, the switch being configured to duplicate a packet and forward the packet and a duplicated packet to the first wireless bridge device and the second wireless bridge device, respectively, wherein at least one of the first wireless bridge device and the second wireless bridge device wirelessly forwards the packet or the duplicated packet to at least one of the plurality of access points. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first wireless bridge device and the second wireless bridge device are configured to have different Service Set Identifiers. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein: if the first wireless bridge device determines that the second wireless bridge device is not in the roaming mode, the first wireless bridge device begins roaming to wirelessly connect to the second access point; and if the first wireless bridge device determines that the second wireless bridge device is in the roaming mode, the first wireless bridge device remains connected to the first access point for a predetermined time period, and after the predetermined time period elapses, the first wireless bridge device determines whether the second wireless bridge device is in the roaming mode. 5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein after the first wireless bridge device finishes the roaming and is wirelessly connected to the second access point, the first wireless bridge device sends to the second wireless bridge device a notification indicating that the first wireless bridge device is no longer in the roaming mode. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein: when the first wireless bridge device is wirelessly connected to the first access point and the second wireless bridge device is roaming to wirelessly connect to the first access point, the second wireless bridge device forwards an authentication request to the first access point via the first wireless bridge device and receives an authentication response from the first access point via the first wireless bridge device; and based on the authentication response, the second wireless bridge device forwards a reassociation request directly to the first access point and receives a reassociation response directly from the first access point so as to establish a wireless connection to the first access point. 7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein: the second wireless bridge device forwards the authentication request to the first wireless bridge device through a wired connection and the first wireless bridge device forwards the authentication request to the first access point through a wireless connection; and the first wireless bridge device receives the authentication response from the first access point through the wireless connection and the second wireless bridge device receives the authentication response from the first bridge device through the wired connection. 8. A system comprising: a plurality of wireless network access points disposed along a pathway; and an apparatus configured to be deployed on a vehicle that is to move along the pathway, the apparatus including: a first wireless bridge device configured to transmit signals to and receive signals from wireless network access points located along a pathway; and a second wireless bridge device configured to transmit signals to and receive signals from the wireless network access points, the first wireless bridge device and the second wireless bridge device being coupled to and communicating with each other so that when the first wireless bridge device is wirelessly connected to a first access point and about to initiate a roaming mode to attempt to wirelessly connect to a second access point, the first wireless bridge device notifies the second wireless bridge device of the initiating of the roaming mode and determines whether the second wireless bridge device is in the roaming mode while the apparatus is moving along the pathway; and an aggregation switch coupled to the plurality of access points to receive signals from or transmit signals to the apparatus through the plurality of access points while the apparatus is moving along the pathway. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein: the apparatus further comprises a switch coupled to the first wireless bridge device and to the second wireless bridge device, the switch being configured to duplicate a packet and forward the packet and a duplicated packet to the first wireless bridge device and the second wireless bridge device, respectively; and at least one of the first wireless bridge device and the second wireless bridge device wirelessly forwards the packet or the duplicated packet to at least one of the plurality of access points. 10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first wireless bridge device and the second wireless bridge device are configured to have different Service Set Identifiers. 11. The system of claim 8 , wherein: if the first wireless bridge device determines that the second wireless bridge device is not in the roaming mode, the first wireless bridge device begins roaming to wirelessly connect to the second access point; and if the first wireless bridge device determines that the second wireless bridge device is in the roaming mode, the first wireless bridge device remains connected to the first access point for a predetermined time period, and after the predetermined time period elapses, the first wireless bridge device determines whether the second wireless bridge device is in the roaming mode. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein after the first wireless bridge device finishes the roaming and is wirelessly connected to the second access point, the first wireless bridge device sends to the second wireless bridge device a notification indicating that the first wireless bridge device is no longer in the roaming mode. 13. The system of claim 8 , wherein: when the first wireless bridge device is wirelessly connected to the first access point and the second wireless bridge device is roaming to wirelessly connect to the first access point, the second wireless bridge device forwards an authentication request to the first access point via the first wireless bridge device and receives an authentication response from the first access point via the first wireless bridge device; and based on the authentication response, the second wireless bridge device forwards a reassociation request directly to the first access point and receives a reassociation response directly from the first access point so as to establish a wireless connection to the first access point. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein: the second wireless bridge device forwards the authentication request to th
