A sensor detects a characteristic of accumulated crop material and a controller manipulates the speed of a baling chamber in response thereto. The speed of a baling chamber of a variable speed baler is manipulated in response to a characteristic of an accumulated crop material. For example, the height of accumulated crop material in an accumulation area may be detected and the speed of the baling chamber manipulated in response thereto. The rate of growth of the bale may also be determined and used in manipulating the speed of the baling chamber.

What is claimed is: 1. A variable speed baler, comprising: a baling chamber configured to bale crop material, the baling chamber having a plurality of bale forming belts driven at a determined speed by at least one powered drive roll; a crop height sensor to detect a height of accumulated crop material at an accumulation region to be fed to the baling chamber; a bale size sensor to detect a size of a bale in the baling chamber; and a controller configured to compare the height of the accumulated crop material to a comparison value using information from the crop height sensor and to determine a growth rate of the bale being formed in the baling chamber using information from the bale size sensor and manipulate the speed of the bale forming belts in the baling chamber in response to the height of accumulated crop material and the growth rate of the bale in the baling chamber, wherein if the bale growth rate is less than zero, the controller determines whether the height of the accumulated crop material is greater than the comparison value, and if the height of the accumulated crop material is greater than the comparison value, the bale forming belts are operated at a user-provided desired speed. 2. The variable speed baler of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is an ultrasonic sensor configured to detect the height of the accumulated material. 3. The variable speed baler of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to manipulate the speed of the bale forming belts in response to an operational mode of the baler. 4. The variable speed baler of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to manipulate the speed of the bale forming belts in accordance with a user-provided speed. 5. The variable speed baler of claim 1 , further comprising: a user interface configured to receive a desired speed value and provide the speed value to the controller. 6. The variable speed baler of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to manipulate the speed of the bale forming belts in response to a characteristic of the accumulated material, a user-provided desired speed, and an operational mode of the baler.
