Official abstract text for this publication.
The present invention relates generally to a support structure for fixating a patient to a treatment unit, and especially to a support structure for fixating the patient to a cardiopulmonary resuscitation unit. An embodiment of the support structure includes a back plate for positioning behind the patient's back posterior to the patient's heart and a front part for positioning around the patient's chest anterior to the patient's heart. Further, the front part can include two legs, each leg having a first end pivotably connected to at least one hinge and a second end removably attachable to the back plate. The front part can further be devised for including a compression/decompression unit arranged to automatically compress or decompress the patient's chest when the front part is attached to the back plate.

What is claimed is: 1. A support structure for cardiopulmonary resuscitation of a patient, comprising: a back plate positionable posterior to a chest cavity of the patient; and a front part positionable anterior to the chest cavity of the patient and structured to be attached to the back plate, the front part including: a central part that is structured to support a removable treatment unit, the removable treatment unit being configurable to cause a compression member to advance from within an outer housing of the removable treatment unit towards the chest cavity of the patient so as to provide compression of the chest cavity of the patient, wherein the central part comprises an opening configured to receive the compression member and a compression pad that is attached to the compression member, and two bowed, rigid legs, each of the bowed, rigid legs extending from the central part and each including an end attachable to opposite portions of the back plate, the bowed, rigid legs structured to maintain a fixed distance between the central part of the support structure and the back plate when the bowed, rigid legs are attached to the back plate; wherein at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs is releasably attached to the back plate, the at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs comprising a releasable member structured to releasably attach to the back plate and comprising a disengagement member, wherein the disengagement member is configured to release the releasable member and is offset from the releasable member along a length of the at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs, and wherein a width of the opening is wider than a width of the compression member but narrower than a width of the outer housing of the removable treatment unit such that when the removable treatment unit is arranged in the central part the central part prevents the outer housing of the removable treatment unit from moving towards the chest cavity of the patient. 2. The support structure of claim 1 , wherein the two bowed, rigid legs are releasably attached to opposite portions of the back plate. 3. The support structure of claim 1 , wherein the disengagement member is movable from a first position to a second position such that the releasable member is released and the at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs is releasable from the back plate. 4. The support structure of claim 1 , further comprising at least one handle, on at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs, formed by an opening in the at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs. 5. The support structure of claim 4 , wherein the at least one handle comprises two handles, each handle, on a respective one of the two bowed, rigid legs, formed by an opening in the respective one of the two bowed, rigid legs. 6. The support structure of claim 4 , wherein the at least one handle includes a crosspiece spanning the opening in the at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs. 7. The support structure of claim 1 , wherein the disengagement member is positioned within an opening in the at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs. 8. The support structure of claim 1 , wherein the releasable member comprises a self-latching member configured such that pressing an end of the at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs against the back plate causes the self-latching member to secure the at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs to the back plate. 9. A support structure for cardiopulmonary resuscitation of a patient, comprising: a front part including: a center portion that is structured to support a removable treatment unit and positionable over a chest of the patient, wherein the removable treatment unit is configurable to cause a compression member to advance from within an outer housing of the removable treatment unit towards the chest cavity of the patient so as to provide compression of the chest of the patient, and wherein the center portion comprises an opening configured to receive the compression member and a compression pad that is attached to the compression member, and two bowed legs formed of a rigid material, the two bowed legs extending from the center portion and formed to extend around the patient; and a back plate positionable under the patient, the back plate having a first end and a second end; wherein the first end of the back plate is structured to be releasably coupled to at least one of the two bowed legs, the at least one of the two bowed legs comprising a releasable member structured to releasably attach to the back plate and comprising a disengagement member, wherein the disengagement member is configured to release the releasable member and is offset from the releasable member along a length of the at least one of the two bowed legs, and wherein a width of the opening is wider than a width of the compression member but narrower than a width of the outer housing of the removable treatment unit such that when the removable treatment unit is arranged in the center portion the center portion prevents the outer housing of the removable treatment unit from moving towards the chest of the patient. 10. The support structure of claim 9 , wherein the second end of the back plate is structured to connect to the other one of the two bowed legs. 11. The support structure of claim 9 , wherein the second end of the back plate is structured to be releasably coupled to the other one of the two bowed legs. 12. The support structure of claim 9 , wherein the second end of the back plate is structured to be pivotably connected to the other one of the two bowed legs. 13. The support structure of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs include an integrated handle formed by an opening in the at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs. 14. The support structure of claim 13 , wherein the two bowed legs each include a respective integrated handle. 15. The support structure of claim 13 , wherein the integrated handle includes a crosspiece spanning the opening in the at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs. 16. A support structure for cardiopulmonary resuscitation of a patient having a cardiac arrest, comprising: a back plate for positioning behind said patient's back posterior to said patient's heart; and a front part for positioning around said patient's chest anterior to said patient's heart, said front part comprising a central part and two bowed, rigid legs, each respective one of said two bowed, rigid legs having an end that is removably attachable to different portions of said back plate, wherein: said two bowed, rigid legs suspend said central part of said front part above said back plate when said front part is attached to said back plate; said central part is structured to support a removable treatment unit, the removable treatment unit being configurable to cause a compression member to advance from within an outer housing of the removable treatment unit towards said patient's chest so as to provide compression of said patient's chest when said front part is attached to said back plate; said central part comprising an opening configured to receive the compression member and a compression pad that is attached to the compression member; said opening is wider than a width of the compression member but narrower than a width of the outer housing of the removable treatment unit such that when the removable treatment unit is arranged in the central part the central part prevents the outer housing of the removable treatment unit from moving towards said patient's chest; and at least one of the two bowed, rigid legs comprises a releasable member stru
