What is claimed is: 1. A computer implemented method of indicating status of multiple video message conversations on a recipient device, the method comprising: receiving a first video message from a sending participant device and associating the first video message with a first video message conversation of the multiple video message conversations, the first video message conversation comprising multiple frames, the first video message conversation having an unread status; automatically generating, by the recipient device, a video thumbnail representation of the first video message conversation using respective thumbnail representations of an automatically selected plurality of frames of the multiple frames of the first video message conversation; storing the first video message conversation with a second video message conversation of the multiple video message conversations, the second video message conversation having multiple frames and having a read status indicating that all video content associated with the second video message conversation has been viewed, the second video message conversation associated with an image thumbnail representation including a thumbnail image of an automatically selected frame of multiple frames of the second video message conversation; causing the video thumbnail representation of the first video message conversation to be displayed responsive to determining that-the first video message conversation has the unread status; and causing the image thumbnail representation of the second video message conversation to be displayed responsive to determining that the second video message conversation has the read status. 2. A computer implemented method according to claim 1 , further comprising: determining a further status of at least one of the first and second video message-conversations at the recipient device; automatically annotating at least one of the video thumbnail representation or image thumbnail representation based, at least in part, on the further status associated with the at least one of the first and second video message conversations by superimposing a visual annotation representing the further status on-the at least one of the video thumbnail representation or the image thumbnail representation. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the further status is based, at least in part, on whether contact information associated with a receiving user is stored in an address book at the sending participant device. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generated video thumbnail representation comprises one or more extracted frames of the first video message. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein causing the video thumbnail representation or causing the image thumbnail representation to be displayed further comprises: determining a location to display the video thumbnail representation or the image thumbnail representation based, at least in part, on whether the video message conversation has unviewed content. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first video message conversation comprises three or more participants. 7. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein automatically generating the video thumbnail representation of the first video message conversation includes automatically selecting at least one frame including a facial image from the first video message conversation. 8. One or more computer readable storage media embodying computer readable instructions which, when executed, perform operations comprising: receiving, at a recipient device, a first video message associated with a first video message conversation and the first video message conversation having multiple frames and having an unread status; automatically generating, by the recipient device, a video thumbnail representation of the first video message conversation using respective thumbnail representations of an automatically selected plurality of frames of the multiple frames of the first video message conversation; storing the first video message conversation with a second video message conversation, the second video message conversation having multiple frames and having a read status indicating that all video content associated with the second video message conversation has been viewed, the second video message conversation associated with an image thumbnail representation including a thumbnail image of an automatically selected frame of multiple frames of the second video message conversation; causing the video thumbnail representation of the first video message conversation to be displayed responsive to the first video message conversation having the unread status; and causing the image thumbnail representation of the second video message conversation to be displayed responsive to the second video message conversation having the read status. 9. The one or more computer readable storage media according to claim 8 , further including computer readable instructions which, when executed, perform operations comprising: creating the first video message conversation, the first video message conversation associated with a particular participant; determining a further status of at least one of the first and second video message conversations; visually annotating at least one of the video thumbnail or the image thumbnail based, at least in part, on a further status associated with the at least one of the first and second video message conversations by automatically superimposing, on the at least one of the video thumbnail representation or the image thumbnail representation, a visual annotation representing the further status associated with the at least one of the first video message conversation or the second video message conversation. 10. The one or more computer readable storage media of claim 9 , wherein the creating further comprises: creating the first video message conversation responsive to receiving initiation data from the particular participant in the first video message conversation. 11. The one or more computer readable storage media of claim 8 , wherein automatically generating the video thumbnail representation further comprises: selecting a subset of one or more frames from the first video message; and storing the subset of one or more frames as the video thumbnail representation. 12. The one or more computer readable storage media of claim 8 , further comprising creating multiple video message conversations, and the causing the video thumbnail representation and the image thumbnail representation to be displayed includes displaying respective summary views of the multiple video message conversations each summary view including a video thumbnail representation or an image thumbnail representation and the respective summary views being displayed in an order based, at least in part, on which content in the multiple video message conversations was most recently received. 13. The one or more computer readable storage media of claim 8 , wherein content associated with the first video message conversation comprises at least one of: a short video message; or a short video clip. 14. The computer readable storage media of claim 8 , wherein the computer readable instructions further include instructions which, when executed, automatically select at least one frame including a facial image from the first video message conversation to generate the video thumbnail representation of the first video message conversation. 15. A recipient device comprising: a display; a network interface connected to exchange video messages with a communication network; one or more processors connected to
