Processes relating to thermal activation (or cracking) of ethane to an intermediate, low purity raw ethylene stream in a first stage. This stream is then mixed with a stream of biomass-derived ethanol that may contain four volume percent or more of water. The resulting mixture is reacted over a suitable catalyst at temperatures and pressures suitable to produce gasoline-range and diesel-range blend stock.

We claim: 1. A process for converting ethane to liquid fuels comprising: a) directing an ethane stream into a thermal activation unit in a first stage to produce an intermediate hydrocarbon stream and a raw ethylene stream comprising less than 60 weight percent ethylene; b) combining the raw ethylene stream with a raw ethanol stream to form a mixture, wherein the raw ethanol stream is derived from biomass and comprises at least 4 volume percent water; c) contacting the mixture with a catalyst to produce a mixed product stream comprising an increased percentage of hydrocarbons containing four or more carbon atoms; d) separating the mixed product stream to produce an intermediate hydrocarbon stream comprising hydrocarbons containing four or more carbon atoms and a light hydrocarbon stream comprising hydrocarbons containing from one to three carbon atoms; e) introducing at least part of the light hydrocarbon stream into a hydrogenation reactor to saturate unconverted olefins, thereby producing a mixture comprising a light paraffins stream and hydrogen gas; f) separating the hydrogen gas from the light paraffins stream; and g) recycling the light paraffins stream as feed to the thermal activation unit. 2. The process according to claim 1 , wherein prior to the contacting of the mixture with the catalyst, the water in the raw ethanol stream is converted to steam, wherein the steam decreases inhibition of the catalyst by hydrogen gas present in the raw ethylene stream. 3. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the catalyst comprises a solid phosphoric acid catalyst, zeolite catalyst, Ni-containing catalyst or mixtures thereof. 4. The process according to claim 1 , additionally comprising fractionating the intermediate hydrocarbon stream to produce at least one of a gasoline fraction, a diesel fraction and combinations thereof. 5. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the raw ethylene stream comprises less than 40 weight percent ethylene. 6. The process according to claim 1 , wherein a hydrogen stream is separated from the raw ethylene stream prior to combining the raw ethylene stream with the raw ethanol stream to form the mixture. 7. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the raw ethanol stream comprises at least 20 volume percent water. 8. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the raw ethanol stream comprises at least 40 volume percent water. 9. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the raw ethanol stream comprises at least 60 volume percent water. 10. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the raw ethylene stream comprises less than 35 weight percent ethylene. 11. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the light paraffins stream is not fed to the thermal activation unit, but instead fed to a natural gas fractionator to produce the ethane stream.
