The invention is directed to platinum(II) thione complexes of formula (I) and to methods of treating cancer using these complexes.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for inhibiting cell growth or proliferation, comprising: administering a chemotheraputic treatment to a subject having breast or lung cancer, contacting a neoplastic eukaryotic cell of the subject with a pharmaceutical composition comprising a platinum(II) thione complex represented by Formula (1): wherein R 1 and R 2 are each, independently, a hydrogen or a C 1 -C 3 alkyl group, a is 1, 2 or 3; and X is nitrate, fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, or acetate. 2. The method of claim 1 that comprises administering, to the subject, trans-[Pt(NH 3 ) 2 (Imt) 2 ].2NO 3 (Complex 1), trans-[Pt(NH 3 ) 2 (MeImt) 2 ]. 2NO 3 (Complex 2), trans-[Pt(NH 3 ) 2 (Me 2 Imt) 2 ]. 2NO 3 (Complex 3), trans-[Pt(NH 3 ) 2 (Et 2 Imt) 2 ]. 2NO 3 (Complex 4), trans-[Pt(NH 3 ) 2 (PrImt) 2 ]. 2NO 3 (Complex 5), trans-[Pt(NH 3 ) 2 (iPrImt) 2 ]. 2NO 3 (Complex 6), or trans-[Pt(NH 3 ) 2 (iPr 2 Imt) 2 ].2 NO 3 (Complex 7). 3. The method of claim 1 that comprises administering, to the subject, trans-[Pt(NH 3 ) 2 (EtDiaz) 2 ]. 2NO 3 (Complex 8). 4. The method of claim 1 that comprises administering, to the subject, trans-[Pt(NH 3 ) 2 (Diap) 2 ]. 2NO 3 (Complex 9). 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the platinum(II) thione complex is administered, to the subject, parenterally. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered, to the subject, intravenously. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the platinum(II) thione complex is administered, to the subject, into a tumor or into a site infiltrated by cancer cells.
