Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An original image is read as an aggregate of a plurality of pixels in which adjacent pixels have different colors (R, G, and B) in a main scanning direction and in a sub-scanning direction, and the read pixels of the respective colors are stored in a line memory in association with information on relative positions of the pixels with respect to another pixel. Then, the stored pixels are sorted so that pixels having the same color are adjacent to each other, and an abnormal pixel (dust) not present in the original image is detected based on the state of the sorted pixels. With this, the dust not present in the original image is detected without increasing the cost, and the dust is corrected without forming a conspicuous trace of correction.

What is claimed is: 1. An image reading apparatus, comprising: a sensor to receive reflected light from an object, the sensor having first and second line sensors, the first line sensor having light receiving elements receiving light of a first color and light receiving elements receiving light of a second color that is different from the first color being arranged in a first direction, the second line sensor having a third light receiving elements receiving light of the first color and light receiving elements receiving light of the second color being arranged in the first direction, and the first line sensor and the second line sensor being arranged at a predetermined interval in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction; at least one processor; and a memory storing instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the processor: to detect an abnormal pixel of the first color based on: image data of a first receiving element receiving light of the first color which is disposed at a first position in the first direction in the first line sensor; and image data of a second receiving element receiving light of the first color which is disposed at a second position in the first direction in the second line sensor, the second position being a position at which a receiving element adjacent to the first receiving element is disposed, and to detect an abnormal pixel of the second color based on: image data of a third receiving element receiving light of the second color which is disposed at a third position in the first direction in the first line sensor; and image data of a fourth receiving element receiving light of the second color which is disposed at a fourth position in the first direction in the second line sensor, the fourth position being a position at which a receiving element adjacent to the third receiving element is disposed. 2. The image reading apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first line sensor further includes light receiving elements receiving light of a third color being arranged in the first direction, the second line further includes light receiving elements receiving light of the third color being arranged in the first direction, wherein, in the first line sensor and the second line sensor, the light receiving elements receiving light of the first color, the light receiving elements receiving light of the second color, and the light receiving elements receiving light of the third color are arranged so that light receiving elements receiving light of the same color are prevented from being adjacent to each other. 3. The image reading apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein in the first line sensor and the second line sensor, the light receiving elements receiving light of the first color, the light receiving elements receiving light of the second color, and the light receiving elements receiving light of the third color are periodically arranged in the first direction. 4. The image reading apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein at each position in the first direction, the color corresponding to the light receiving element in the first line sensor differs from that corresponding to the light receiving element in the second line sensor. 5. The image reading apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein each of the light receiving elements receiving light of the first color, the light receiving elements receiving light of the second color, and the light receiving elements receiving light of the third color comprises a light transmitting member in which light of a corresponding wavelength is set as a peak transmission wavelength, and an optical semiconductor element which outputs a signal having a level corresponding to intensity of light that has passed through the light transmitting member. 6. The image reading apparatus according to claim 5 , further comprising an optical system to guide, toward the light transmitting member, light emitted from a predetermined light source and reflected by the object, the optical system having a resolution that is lower than a resolution of the first and second line sensors. 7. The image reading apparatus according to claim 6 , further comprising a memory to store the image data for each light receiving element row, wherein the instructions further include instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the processor: to convert the signal output based on the intensity of the reflected light into image data represented by a digital value; to sort a plurality of pieces of image data stored in the memory into each pixel row of the same color, and to detect the abnormal pixel based on the digital value of the image data sorted by the sorting unit. 8. The image reading apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the instructions further include instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the processor to binarize the image data based on the digital value of the image data, to thereby detect the abnormal pixel based on a distribution of binarized data obtained through binarization. 9. The image reading apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the instructions further include instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the processor to determine whether or not a pixel detected as the abnormal pixel has a predetermined pixel width or less in the first direction, to thereby enable execution of processing based on a result of determination. 10. The image reading apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the instructions further include instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the processor to define a pixel adjacent to the detected abnormal pixel in a predetermined direction also as the abnormal pixel. 11. The image reading apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the instructions further include instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the processor to use a pixel adjacent to the abnormal pixel in the same color, to thereby correct the abnormal pixel to have the same color. 12. The image reading apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the instructions further include instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the processor to subject the abnormal pixel having a one-pixel width to linear interpolation using a plurality of pixels having the same color, to thereby correct the abnormal pixel to have the same color. 13. The image reading apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein, in a case where a predetermined number or more of the abnormal pixels having a predetermined color continue in the first direction, the instructions further include instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the processor to determine a pixel having a color different from the predetermined color, which corresponds to the abnormal pixel of the predetermined color in the first direction, as the abnormal pixel. 14. An image reading apparatus, comprising: a sensor comprising: a first light-receiving-element row, a second light-receiving-element row and a third light-receiving-element row, each including a plurality of light receiving elements that are disposed in a first direction, the first light-receiving-element row, the second light-receiving-element row, and the third light-receiving-element row being disposed at a predetermined interval in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction; a plurality of transmitting portions that are disposed in correspondence with the plurality of light receiving elements included in each of the first light-receiving-element row, the se
