To display an image list stored in a memory with good visibility and to display the image list at a high speed, an image display device reads an image file in an Exif format, extracts a thumbnail image included in the image file in the Exif format, and generates a displayed image having a predetermined size and a square shape, thus displaying it in the image list. It is possible to improve visibility in displaying the image file aligning square-shaped displayed image having the same size while precluding blanks. It is possible to perform high-speed processing in producing an image list using thumbnail images included in image files in the Exif format.

The invention claimed is: 1. An image display device comprising a signal processor and a display controlled by a controller configured to process a plurality of thumbnail images each having a predetermined aspect ratio based on a plurality of main images having different aspect ratios, wherein each of the plurality of thumbnail images includes an effective image area surrounded by blanks depending on each of the plurality of main images, wherein the controller processes a thumbnail image among the plurality of thumbnail images by way of (i) to (iii), (i) specifying a short side of the effective image area of the thumbnail image in a horizontal direction when the effective image area is surrounded by blanks formed in the horizontal direction or in a vertical direction when the effective image area is surrounded by blanks formed in the vertical direction; (ii) resizing the effective image area of the thumbnail image by adjusting the short side of the effective image area to a predetermined length of a square shape that is determined in advance, thus producing a resized image; and (iii) extracting the square shape from the effective image area of the resized image about a center of the effective image area of the resized image, thus generating a display image corresponding to the square shape. 2. The image display device according to claim 1 , wherein the display image includes all pixels on the short side of the effective image area of the thumbnail image. 3. The image display device according to claim 2 , wherein the effective image area of the thumbnail image is resized while maintaining the predetermined aspect ratio of the thumbnail image, thus eliminating the blanks formed in either the horizontal direction or the vertical direction of the thumbnail image. 4. An image display method for processing a plurality of thumbnail images each having a predetermined aspect ratio based on a plurality of main images having different aspect ratios, wherein each of the plurality of thumbnail images includes an effective image area surrounded by blanks depending on each of the plurality of main images, comprising: specifying a short side of the effective image area of the thumbnail image in a horizontal direction when the effective image area is surrounded by blanks formed in the horizontal direction or in a vertical direction when the effective image area is surrounded by blanks formed in the vertical direction; resizing the effective image area of the thumbnail image by adjusting the short side of the effective image area to a predetermined length of a square shape that is determined in advance, thus producing a resized image; and extracting the square shape from the effective image area of the resized image about a center of the effective image area of the resized image, thus generating a display image corresponding to the square shape. 5. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored a program causing a computer to implement the image display method according to claim 4 .
