A portable articulated arm coordinate measurement machine (AACMM) is provided. The AACMM having a manually positionable articulated arm having first and second ends, the arm including a plurality of connected arm segments, each of the arm segments including at least one position transducer for producing position signals, at least one of the position signals passing between two of the arm segments through a first slip ring assembly. A first a first electronic circuit is provided that receives the position signals. A base section is connected to the second end. A probe assembly includes a probe end and a cover. The cover rotates about an axis extending through the probe assembly, the cover having at least one indentation formed thereon. The probe assembly is connected to the first end. The AACMM measures a three-dimensional coordinate of a point in space associated with the probe end.

What is claimed is: 1. A portable articulated arm coordinate measurement machine, comprising: a manually positionable articulated arm having opposed first and second ends, the articulated arm including a plurality of connected arm segments, each of the plurality of connected arm segments including at least one position transducer for producing a plurality of position signals, at least one of the plurality of position signals passing between two of the plurality of connected arm segments through a first slip ring assembly; a first electronic circuit that receives the plurality of position signals; a base section connected to the second end; and a probe assembly including a probe end and a cover, the cover being coupled to rotate about an axis extending through the probe assembly, the cover having at least one indentation formed thereon; wherein the probe assembly is connected to the first end; and wherein the articulated arm coordinate measurement machine is configured to measure a three-dimensional coordinate of a point in space associated with the probe end. 2. The portable articulated arm coordinate measurement machine of claim 1 , wherein the probe assembly includes support member extending at least partially through the probe assembly, the axis extending through the inner core. 3. The portable articulated arm coordinate measurement machine of claim 2 , wherein the probe assembly further comprises a first bearing disposed between the support member and the cover. 4. The portable articulated arm coordinate measurement machine of claim 3 , wherein the probe assembly further includes a second bearing disposed between the support member and the cover. 5. The portable articulated arm coordinate measurement machine of claim 1 , wherein the cover is disposed to freely rotate about the axis. 6. The portable articulated arm coordinate measurement machine of claim 1 , further comprising at least one switch mounted to the cover. 7. The portable articulated arm coordinate measurement machine of claim 6 , wherein the probe assembly further comprises a processing circuit coupled to the support member and a slip ring, the slip ring being electrically coupled between the at least one switch and the processing circuit. 8. The portable articulated arm coordinate measurement machine of claim 7 , wherein the probe assembly further comprises a contact circular channel member coupled to the support member and electrically coupled to the processing circuit. 9. The portable articulated arm coordinate measurement machine of claim 8 , wherein the slip ring further comprises a plurality of spaced spring fingers that are electrically coupled to the at least one switch and in contact with the circular channel member. 10. The portable articulated arm coordinate measurement machine of claim 1 , further comprising a handle coupled to the cover. 11. The portable articulated arm coordinate measurement machine of claim 10 , wherein the handle is removably coupled to the cover.
