Baseline values for metal detection readings associated with an item inserted into an infeed mouth of a depository are obtained before the item is pinched on a pathway of the depository. The baseline values are adjusted by additional readings obtained when the item is pinched on the pathway for transport. The adjusted baseline values are processed with calculated values from ongoing and fluctuating current readings to determine at least one final value. A determination is made as to whether the item includes at least some metal based on comparison of the at least one final value and a predefined value.

The invention claimed is: 1. A media infeed module, comprising: an infeed mouth; a media track adjacent the infeed mouth defining a pathway of a media item; a media transport for transporting the media item along the media track; a pinch mechanism adjacent the infeed mouth for pinching the media item against the track when the media item is at the infeed mouth; a metal detection sensor adjacent the infeed mouth; a processor; and an infeed controller; wherein the infeed controller is configured to: i) execute on the processor, ii) receive metal detection readings from the metal detection sensor, including baseline metal detection readings before the pinch mechanism is activated to pinch the media item at the infeed mouth, iii) calculate a maximum metal detection value based on the baseline metal detection readings, preconfigured threshold values, and ongoing variations in resistance and inductance values provided by the metal detection sensor, and iv) determine based on the maximum metal detection value whether to: a) transport the media item along the track, b) stop transportation of the media item within the media depository, or c) transport the media item out the infeed mouth. 2. The depository of claim 1 , wherein the media depository is one of: a Self-Service Terminal (SST), an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), and a Point-Of-Sale (POS) terminal.
