Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A device includes a head to perform an operation on a conveyed object; a head moving device to move the head in a width direction orthogonal to a conveyance direction of the conveyed object; a position detector to detect a position of the conveyed object in the width direction; a speed detector to detect a moving speed of the conveyed object in the width direction; a position predictor to obtain a predicted width position of the conveyed object after a predetermined period, based on a detected position of the conveyed object and a detected moving speed of the conveyed object; a speed calculator to calculate a travel speed of the head; and a head travel controller to control the head moving device to move the head at the calculated travel speed. With the calculated travel speed, the head arrives at the predicted width position after the predetermined period.

What is claimed is: 1. A device comprising: a head to perform an operation on an object, upon the object being conveyed in a conveyance direction; a head moving device to move the head in a width direction orthogonal to the conveyance direction; a position detector to detect a position of the object in the width direction, upon the object being conveyed; a speed detector to detect a moving speed of the object in the width direction, upon the object being conveyed; a position predictor to predict a width position of the object, upon the object being conveyed, after elapse of a time period, based on the position detected by the position detector and the moving speed generated detected by the speed detector; a speed calculator to calculate a travel speed of the head in the width direction to cause the head to arrive at the width position obtained after the elapse of the time period; and a head travel controller to control the head moving device to move the head at the travel speed calculated by the speed calculator. 2. The device according to claim 1 , wherein, in response to a direction of movement of the object in the width direction changing to a direction different from a travel direction of the head during travel control of the head, upon the object being conveyed, the head travel controller is configured to cause the head moving device to stop the head. 3. The device according to claim 1 , wherein, in response to an amount of movement of the object in the width direction being relatively smaller than a threshold during travel control of the head, upon the object being conveyed, the head travel controller is configured to cause the head moving device to stop the head, the threshold being not relatively greater than an estimated movement amount of the object calculated based on the moving speed of the object detected by the speed detector, upon the object being conveyed. 4. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the head and the position detector are disposed such that an operation area of the head overlaps, at least partly, with a detection range of the position detector in the conveyance direction of the object, upon the object being conveyed. 5. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the position detector detects the position of the object in the width direction, based on a pattern on the object, upon the object being conveyed. 6. A method of controlling a head to perform an operation on an object, upon the object being conveyed in a conveyance direction, the method comprising: moving the head in a width direction orthogonal to the conveyance direction of the object, upon the object being conveyed; detecting a position of the object in the width direction, upon the object being conveyed; detecting a moving speed of the object conveyed in the width direction, upon the object being conveyed; predicting a width position of the object, upon the object being conveyed, after elapse of a time period, based on the position of the object detected and the moving speed of the object detected; calculating a travel speed of the head in the width direction to cause the head to arrive at the width position predicted after the elapse of the time period; and moving the head at the travel speed calculated. 7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising: stopping the head in response to a direction of movement of the object in the width direction changing to a direction different from a travel direction of the head during travel control of the head, upon the object being conveyed. 8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising: stopping the head, in response to an amount of movement of the object in the width direction being relatively smaller than a threshold during travel control of the head, upon the object being conveyed, the threshold being not relatively greater than an estimated movement amount of the object calculated based on the detected moving speed of the object, upon the object being conveyed. 9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the detecting includes detecting the position of the object in the width direction, based on a pattern on the object, upon the object being conveyed. 10. A computer-readable non-transitory recording medium storing a program for causing a computer to execute a method of controlling a head to perform an operation on an object, upon the object being conveyed in a conveyance direction, the method comprising moving the head in a width direction orthogonal to the conveyance direction of the object, upon the object being conveyed; detecting a position of the object in the width direction, upon the object being conveyed; detecting a moving speed of the object in the width direction, upon the object being conveyed; predicting a width position of the object, upon being conveyed, after elapse of a time period, based on the position of the object detected and the moving speed of the object detected; calculating a travel speed of the head in the width direction to cause the head to arrive at the width position predicted after the elapse of the time period; and moving the head at the travel speed calculated. 11. The computer-readable non-transitory recording medium of claim 10 , wherein the method further comprises: stopping the head in response to a direction of movement of the object in the width direction changing to a direction different from a travel direction of the head during travel control of the head, upon the object being conveyed. 12. The computer-readable non-transitory recording medium of claim 10 , wherein the method further comprises: stopping the head, in response to an amount of movement of the object in the width direction being relatively smaller than a threshold during travel control of the head, upon the object being conveyed, the threshold being not relatively greater than an estimated movement amount of the object calculated based on the detected moving speed of the object, upon the object being conveyed. 13. The computer-readable non-transitory recording medium of claim 10 , wherein the detecting includes detecting the position of the object in the width direction, based on a pattern on the object, upon the object being conveyed. 14. An apparatus, comprising: a conveyance mechanism to convey the object in a conveyance direction, wherein the object is a recording medium; and an image forming device, including the device of claim 1 , to form an image on the recording medium. 15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the image forming device is configured to form the image on the recording medium in a speckle pattern, and wherein the position detector is configured to detect a position of the object in the width direction, upon the object being conveyed, based upon an amount of displacement of the speckle pattern in the image. 16.
