What is claimed is: 1. A solid state battery comprising: a flexible polymer sheet (FPS) having a first side and a second opposed side spaced apart by a thickness; and an array of solid state pillars supported by the FPS, each pillar extending through the thickness of the FPS and having an anode layer adjacent to the first side, a cathode layer adjacent to the second side, and an inorganic solid electrolyte (ISE) layer interposed between the anode and cathode layers. 2. The battery of claim 1 wherein the anode layer of each of the pillars forms a protrusion extending away from the first side to increase an exposed surface area of the anode layer. 3. The battery of claim 1 wherein the cathode layer of each of the pillars forms a protrusion extending away from the second side to increase an exposed surface area of the cathode layer. 4. The battery of claim 1 wherein the polymer is non-ionically conductive. 5. The battery of claim 1 wherein the solid state battery includes a first fluid on the first side and a second fluid on the second side. 6. The battery of claim 5 wherein one of the first and second fluids is in gas phase. 7. The battery of claim 5 wherein one of the first and second fluids is an aqueous solvent and the other of the first and second fluids is a nonaqueous solvent. 8. The battery of claim 5 wherein at least one of the anode layer and cathode layer of each pillar has a degree of porosity for flow of the respective fluid therethrough. 9. The battery of claim 1 wherein the FPS has a first polymer layer formed from a first polymer and a second polymer layer formed from a second polymer. 10. The battery of claim 9 wherein the FPS has a third polymer layer formed from a third polymer. 11. The battery of claim 1 wherein the FPS includes one of a co-polymer and a polymer blend. 12. The battery of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first and second exposed ends of each pillar is co-planar with the first and second sides, respectively, of the FPS. 13. The battery of claim 1 wherein the FPS is non-ionically conductive. 14. The battery of claim 1 wherein the FPS is wound into a spiral shaped cell. 15. The battery of claim 1 wherein the array of pillars provides mechanical strength for the battery and wherein the FPS interconnects the pillars to provide flexibility for the battery such that one pillar is moveable relative to another pillar in the array. 16. A battery comprising: a flexible polymer sheet (FPS) having a first side and a second opposed side; and an array of inorganic solid electrolyte pillars, each pillar supported and surrounded by the FPS and extending through a thickness of the FPS, each pillar having an exposed anode layer adjacent to the first side, an exposed cathode layer adjacent to the second side, and an inorganic solid electrolyte layer interposed between the anode and cathode layers. 17. A battery comprising: a flexible polymer sheet (FPS) having first and second opposed sides; an array of solid state pillars supported by the FPS, each pillar extending through the FPS and having a first end co-planar with the first side and a second exposed end adjacent to the second side; and a flexible film of an anode material provided over the first side of the FPS and the first end of each of the pillars. 18. The battery of claim 17 further comprising one of a solution and a fluid interacting with the second end of each of the pillars and the second side of the FPS. 19. The battery of claim 17 wherein each pillar comprises an inorganic solid electrolyte material. 20. The battery of claim 17 wherein the FPS comprises a selectively ionically conductive material.
