Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A clamp for selectively compressing a portion of tubing, such as an extension leg of a PICC or other catheter, is disclosed. The clamp is able to be opened or closed with a thumb and finger of a single hand of a user and is slidably attached to the tubing so as to enable its placement as desired along the tube. In one embodiment, the tubing clamp comprises a body including first and second body portions hingedly connected to one another in a clamshell configuration, a latch for releasably latching the first and second body portions together, and at least two tube compression members. The tube compression members cooperate to compress and occlude a portion of tubing passing through the tubing clamp when the first and second body portions are latched to one another.

What is claimed is: 1. A clamp for a compressible tube, comprising: a body including a first body portion hingedly connected to a second body portion, moveable between an open position and a closed position, wherein: the first body portion includes a first occlusion member and a first retention component; and the second body portion includes a second occlusion member and a second retention component, the first and second retention components configured to: each receive a portion of the compressible tube; and limit a movement of the first body portion relative to the second body portion, to stop the first body portion being moved to the open position, when the portion of compressible tube is received by the first and second retention components; and a latch for releasably securing the first body portion and the second body portion in a closed position. 2. The clamp according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second occlusion members are aligned opposite one another. 3. The clamp according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second occlusion members each include a flat surface for engaging a portion of the compressible tube. 4. The clamp according to claim 3 , wherein the flat surfaces are spaced so as to occlude a portion of the compressible tube with the clamp is in the closed position. 5. The clamp according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second retention components consist of a partially open loop. 6. The clamp according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second retention components consist of a closed loop. 7. The clamp according to claim 1 , wherein the first retention component and the first occlusion member are adjacent one another and wherein the second retention component and the second occlusion member are adjacent one another. 8. The clamp according to claim 1 , wherein at least one occlusion member includes a convex engagement surface and at least one occlusion member includes a concave engagement surface. 9. An occlusion device for a medical article, comprising: a base portion including a first occlusion member and a first retention component; and a cover portion, hingedly connected to the base portion and moveable between a closed position, a first open position and a second open position, the second open position being hyperextended relative to the first open position, the cover portion including a second occlusion member and a second retention component, wherein: each of the first and second retention components are configured to receive a portion of the medical article; the first and second occlusion members are configured to occlude a portion of the medical article when in the first open position; and the base and the cover portions are configured to enclose the occluded portion of the medical article in the first open position. 10. The occlusion device according to claim 9 , wherein the cover portion is prevented from moving to the second open position when a portion of the medical article is retained by each of the first and second retention components. 11. The occlusion device according to claim 9 , wherein the first and second retention components consist of a partially open loop. 12. The occlusion device according to claim 9 , wherein the first and second retention components consist of a closed loop. 13. The occlusion device according to claim 9 , wherein the base and cover portions include a latch for releasably securing the base and cover portions in the first open position. 14. The occlusion device according to claim 9 , wherein the base portion includes one extension portion. 15. The occlusion device according to claim 14 , wherein the extension portion co-operates with the cover portion so as to aide in aligning the base portion and the cover portion. 16. The occlusion device according to claim 9 , wherein the portion of the medical article includes an extension leg of a catheter, and wherein the occlusion device further includes indicia disposed on an external surface of at least one of the base and cover portions. 17. A method of selectively occluding a portion of a medical article, comprising: providing a clamp comprising: a body including a first portion hingedly attached to a second portion, moveable between a first position and a second position, the first and second body portions including a latch to releasably secure the first and second body portions in the first position, each of the first and second body portions including a compression member and a retention component; disposing a portion of the medical article through each of the retention components so as to at least restrict a movement of the second body portion relative to the first body portion to prevent the body moving to the second position when the clamp is in an unlatched position; and selectively latching the first and second body portions together via the latch, wherein the first and second compression members compress and occlude the portion of the medical article when the first and second body portions are in the first position. 18. The method according to claim 17 , further comprising selectively unlatching the first and second body portions via the latch such that the first and second compression members do not compress and occlude the portion of the medical article. 19. The method according to claim 18 , wherein the selectively latching and unlatching of the first and second body portions is performed manually by a thumb and finger of a single hand of a user. 20. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the first and second body portions substantially enclose the occluded portion of the medical article when the clamp is in the first position.
