Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A gel composition for air freshening or disinfecting, comprising a silicon alkoxide or colloidal silica, a volatile or gaseous fragrance and/or disinfectant, water, an acid or base catalyst, a water-soluble solvent, and optionally other volatile components and additives, and a method for preparing the same. The gel can be transparent or colored, has a homogeneous texture and a soft to rigid structure, and contains volatile or gaseous components from 0 vol % to 85 vol % for scented materials (fragrance and oils) and/or 0-8000 ppm of disinfectant, which are released at a steady rate under ambient conditions, controlled by the shape and opening of the gel container. Botanicals or plastic decorations may be added into the gel to improve its aesthetic appeal. The preparation method is easier and requires less energy consumption and the gel is used as an air freshener or disinfectant.

What is claimed is: 1. An air freshening or disinfecting gel composition comprising a mixture of: (i) a first component selected from the group consisting of at least one silicon alkoxide, at least one colloidal silica, and a combination thereof; wherein the silicon alkoxide is selected from the group consisting of tetramethyl orthosilicate, tetraethyl orthosilicate, tetrapropyl orthosilicate, and a combination thereof; (ii) a second component selected from the group consisting of a volatile component, a gaseous disinfectant, and a combination thereof; wherein the volatile component is selected from the group consisting of fragrances, deodorizers, essential oils, insect repellants, and a combination thereof; (iii) water; (iv) an acid or base catalyst; and (v) a solvent selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, dipropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol methyl ether, isopropyl myristate, diethyl phthalate, glyceryl triacetate, benzyl benzoate, 3-methoxy-3-methyl-1-butanol, benzyl alcohol, ethanol, isopropanol, and a combination thereof; and wherein the gel composition (a) is transparent having a light transmittance of at least 80% as measured spectrophotometrically at the range of 500-800 nm; (b) releases the volatile component or gaseous disinfectant at a steady rate over a period of at least one month to the surrounding environment; and (c) has an elasticity allowing more than 25% compression without cracking. 2. The gel composition according to claim 1 , wherein the first component is present in an amount of 5-50 vol % based on total volume of the gel composition; the volatile component is present in an amount of from more than 0 to 85 vol % based on total volume of the gel composition; the gaseous disinfectant is present in an amount of from more than 0 to 8000 ppm based on total weight of the gel composition; and water is present in an amount of 1-50 vol % based on total volume of the gel composition. 3. The gel composition according to claim 1 , wherein the volatile component is present in an amount of 50-70 vol % based on the total volume of the gel composition. 4. The gel composition according to claim 1 , wherein the volatile component is present in an amount of 8-35 vol % based on the total volume of the gel composition. 5. The gel composition according to claim 1 , wherein the gaseous disinfectant is present in an amount of 800-2000 ppm based on total weight of the gel composition. 6. The gel composition according to claim 1 , wherein the gaseous disinfectant is chlorine dioxide. 7. The gel composition according to claim 1 , wherein the acid is selected from the group consisting of HNO 3 , HCl, H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 and citric acid. 8. The gel composition according to claim 1 , wherein the base is selected from the group consisting of NH 4 OH, NaOH, KOH and an alkaline colloidal silica suspension. 9. The gel composition according to claim 1 further comprising a botanical. 10. The gel composition according to claim 1 further comprising a plastic decoration. 11. The gel composition of claim 1 , wherein the second component includes at least one fragrance and at least one gaseous disinfectant. 12. The gel composition of claim 1 , wherein the acid or base is selected from the group consisting of HNO 3 , HCl, H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , citric acid, NH 4 OH, NaOH, KOH and an alkaline colloidal silica suspension.
