Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A transaction card may include a first card component having a first structural feature associated with a first surface, a second card component separate from the first card component and attachable thereto, and having a second structural feature associated with a second surface. The first and second structural features are adapted to engage each other. The card may include a transaction component, and a bracing layer disposed between the first and second card components. One of the first and second card components may include a first locating feature configured to accommodate the transaction component, and the bracing layer may include a second locating feature separate from the first locating feature. Each of the first and second surfaces may be adapted to engage with the bracing layer. The first and second structural features may be configured to interconnect via a tongue and groove connection, a lattice pattern.

What is claimed is: 1. A transaction card, comprising: a first card component having a first structural feature associated with a first surface; a second card component separate from the first card component and attachable thereto, having a second structural feature associated with a second surface, wherein the first and second structural features are adapted to engage each other; a transaction component; and a bracing layer disposed between the first and second card components, wherein: one of the first and second card components includes a first locating feature configured to accommodate the transaction component; the bracing layer includes a second locating feature separate from the first locating feature; and each of the first and second surfaces being adapted to engage with the bracing layer. 2. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first and second structural features are configured to interconnect via a tongue and groove connection. 3. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first and second structural features are configured to interconnect via a lattice pattern. 4. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein: one of the first and second structural features comprises a protrusion extending from the respective first or second surface; and the other of the first and second structural features comprises a recess configured to receive the protrusion. 5. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the bracing layer includes: a first side opposite a second side; each of the first and second sides comprises one of the first and second structural features; and each of the first and second sides is configured to interconnect with one of the first and second surfaces. 6. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first structural feature comprises a plurality of ribs separated by gaps. 7. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the first and second structural features are adapted to retainably engage each other. 8. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein second locating feature is configured to provide access to the transaction component. 9. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ribs is integral with the first card component. 10. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the bracing layer and a portion of each of the first and second surfaces are separated by an adhesive gap. 11. A method for manufacturing a transaction card, comprising: forming a first card component having a first surface; forming a first structural feature associated with the first surface; forming a second card component separate from the first card component and attachable thereto and having a second surface; forming a second structural feature associated with the second surface, wherein the first and second structural features are adapted to engage each other; and forming a bracing layer between the first and second card components, wherein: one of the first and second card components includes a first locating feature configured to accommodate a transaction component; the bracing layer includes a second locating feature separate from the first locating feature; and each of the first and second surfaces being adapted to engage with the bracing layer. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first and second structural features are configured to interconnect via a tongue and groove connection. 13. The method of claim 11 , wherein: forming the first structural feature comprises forming a protrusion extending from the first surface; and forming the second structural feature comprises forming a recess configured to receive the protrusion. 14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising: wherein forming the bracing layer comprises forming the bracing layer to have a first side opposite a second side, and each of the first and second sides comprises one of the first and second structural features. 15. The method of claim 11 , wherein forming the first structural feature comprises forming a plurality of ribs separated by gaps. 16. The method of claim 11 , wherein forming the second structural feature comprises forming a plurality of recesses configured to receive the plurality of ribs. 17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising affixing the transaction component to one of the first and second card components. 18. The method of claim 11 , wherein a portion of the bracing layer and a portion of each of the first and second surfaces are separated by an adhesive gap. 19. The method of claim 11 , further comprising applying an external pressure causing the first and second surfaces to interconnect with the bracing layer. 20. A transaction card, comprising: a first card component having a first structural feature associated with a first surface; a second card component separate from the first card component and attachable thereto, having a second structural feature associated with a second surface, wherein the first and second structural features are adapted to engage each other; a transaction component; and a bracing layer disposed between the first and second card components, wherein: one of the first and second card components includes a first locating feature configured to accommodate the transaction component; the bracing layer includes a second locating feature separate from the first locating feature; each of the first and second surfaces being adapted to engage with the bracing layer; and the transaction component is a microchip or a magnetic strip.
