Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to methods for inducing color change in glass and glass-ceramic articles. According to one embodiment, color change may be x-ray induced in glass or glass-ceramic articles. The method for x-ray inducing color change may include exposing the glass or glass-ceramic article to x-rays at a temperature of up to 200° C. to induce a colored area in the glass or glass-ceramic article. The glass or glass-ceramic article may comprise: 50-85 mole % SiO2; 5-25 mole % Al2O3; 0-15 mole % P2O5; 0-15 mole % B2O3; 5-25 mole % R2O, wherein R2O=Li2O+Na2O+K2O.

What is claimed is: 1. A colored glass or glass-ceramic article having a thickness ≤1.5 mm and comprising an x-ray induced colored area in the glass or glass-ceramic article, the glass or glass-ceramic article comprising: 55-75 mole % SiO 2 ; 5-25 mole % Al 2 O 3 ; 0-10 mole % P 2 O 5 ; 0-10 mole % B 2 O 3 ; 5-25 mole % R 2 O, wherein R 2 O=Li 2 O+Na 2 O+K 2 O; and 0.1 to 2 mole % of at least one coloring agent chosen from CuO, MnO 2 , Ag 2 O, or combinations thereof. 2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the colored glass or glass-ceramic article comprises 2-10 mole % B 2 O 3 . 3. The article of claim 1 , wherein the colored glass or glass-ceramic article comprises 2-10 mole % P 2 O 5 . 4. The article of claim 1 , wherein the colored glass or glass-ceramic article comprises 55-75 mole % SiO 2 . 5. The article of claim 1 , wherein the colored glass or glass-ceramic article comprises 10-20 mole % Al 2 O 3 . 6. The article of claim 1 , wherein the colored glass or glass-ceramic article comprises 0.2 to 1.0 mole % coloring agent. 7. The article of claim 1 , wherein the coloring agent also includes SnO 2 . 8. The article of claim 1 , wherein the colored glass or glass-ceramic article comprises −20 mol %<R 2 O+RO—(Al 2 O 3 +P 2 O 5 +B 2 O 3 )<20 mol %, wherein RO=MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO+ZnO. 9. The article of claim 1 , wherein the colored glass or glass-ceramic article comprises −10 mol %<R 2 O+RO—(Al 2 O 3 +P 2 O 5 +B 2 O 3 )<10 mol %, wherein RO=MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO+ZnO. 10. The article of claim 1 , wherein the colored area comprises a layer that extends from a surface of the glass or glass-ceramic article to a depth of 1-500 μm. 11. The article of claim 1 , wherein the glass or glass-ceramic article is chemically or thermally strengthened. 12. The article of claim 1 , wherein the colored glass or glass-ceramic article comprises 10-20 mole % Na 2 O.
