Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A material handling system includes a belted conveyor that longitudinally transports low profile articles. An actuating mechanism selectively positions a counter rotating cylindrical roller brush diagonal across the conveyor surface to divert the low profile articles to a lateral destination off a side of the belted conveyor and can position the cylindrical roller brush away the belted conveyor to allow the low profile articles to transport to a longitudinal destination at a terminal end of the belted conveyor.

What is claimed is: 1. A material handling system, comprising: a conveyor having a conveying surface and supported by a frame and that longitudinally transports articles to a downstream destination; a diverter associated with the conveyor, wherein the diverter comprises: a brush rotatable about a rotation axis and positioned above the conveying surface; an actuating mechanism comprising: a mounting member coupled to the brush; and an actuator coupled to the mounting member for positioning the brush from a non-diverting position to a diverting position, wherein in the diverting position, the brush is positioned so as to divert one or more articles to a lateral destination, and wherein in the non-diverting position, the brush is positioned so as to allow articles to be conveyed on the conveyor toward the downstream destination; a motor for rotating the brush; and a controller for selectively positioning the brush in the non-diverting position and the diverting position. 2. The material handling system of claim 1 , wherein the brush is substantially cylindrical. 3. The material handling system of claim 1 , wherein the motor is operable to rotate the brush in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of the conveying surface. 4. The material handling system of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is attached so as to rotate in a horizontal plane between the non-diverting and diverting positions. 5. The material handling system of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is attached so as to rotate in a vertical plane between the non-diverting and diverting positions. 6. The material handling system of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is attached to the frame of the conveyor. 7. The material handling system of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is attached so as to allow simultaneous rotational movement in a horizontal plane and translation in a vertical plane via a helical cam mechanism. 8. The material handling system of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is attached so as to allow simultaneous rotational movement in a horizontal plane and translation in a vertical plane via a mechanical linkage. 9. The material handling system of claim 1 , wherein the conveyor includes left and right vertical sides to retain articles on the conveying surface, wherein at least one of the left and right vertical sides includes a lateral opening that communicates with the lateral destination for the articles. 10. The material handling system of claim 9 wherein one of the left and right vertical sides includes a brush aperture through which the brush is rotated above the conveying surface for diverting articles in the diverting position and retracting to the non-diverting position. 11. The material handling system of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the left and right vertical sides includes a bumped out area to accommodate one end of the brush to allow a vertical translation of the brush relative to the conveying surface in the non-diverting position. 12. The material handling system of claim 1 , wherein in the diverting position, the brush maintains contact with the articles to be diverted on the conveying surface until the articles divert off of a lateral side of the conveyor to the lateral destination. 13. The material handling system of claim 1 , wherein the brush is configured and positioned with respect to the conveying surface to reliably divert low profile articles when in the diverting position. 14. The material handling system of claim 1 , wherein the brush is configured and positioned with respect to the conveying surface to reliably divert polybags when in the diverting position. 15. A diverter for use with a conveyor having a conveying surface for conveying articles to a longitudinal destination comprising: a brush rotatable about a rotation axis; an actuating mechanism comprising: a mounting member coupled to the brush, and an actuator coupled to the mounting member to position the brush from a non-diverting position to a diverting position, wherein in the diverting position, the brush may be positioned with respect to the conveying surface of the conveyor to divert the articles to a lateral destination, and wherein in the non-diverting position, the brush is positioned with respect to the conveying surface so as to allow articles to continue toward the longitudinal destination; and a motor for rotating the brush. 16. The diverter of claim 15 , wherein the motor is operable to rotate the brush in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of the conveying surface. 17. A method for diverting articles from a conveyor surface to a diverter position comprising: positioning a rotatable brush above the conveyor surface in a non-diverting position wherein the articles are allowed to pass to a downstream conveyor position; rotating the brush; and positioning the rotating brush in a diverting position wherein the brush moves one or more articles toward the diverter position. 18. The method of claim 17 , including rotating the brush in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of the conveyor surface.
