Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A hybrid zero turn vehicle is disclosed, having an internal combustion engine supported on a frame and an operator platform located adjacent to the rear of the frame. An upright riser is disposed on the frame. The vehicle uses an electrical generating device driven by the engine and first electric drive motors or transmissions to drive the output wheels. An electrical bus or controllers may be mounted on a panel of the upright riser and offset vertically above the engine to assist in providing a compact design. A pair of drive levers is mounted on the upright riser for controlling the output of the vehicle.

We claim: 1. A vehicle comprising: an internal combustion engine supported on a frame, the frame having a front end and a rear end; an operator platform disposed on the frame adjacent to the rear end of the frame, configured to permit an operator to stand on the vehicle during operation of the vehicle; an upright riser disposed on the frame and having a rear surface providing a support portion for the operator, and a front surface opposite to the rear surface; at least one electrical generating device driven by the internal combustion engine for generating electrical power, the at least one electrical generating device being connected to a battery disposed on the vehicle; a pair of drive controls for controlling speed and direction of the vehicle, the pair of drive controls being disposed on the upright riser; a pair of traction controllers disposed on the front surface of the upright riser generally opposite to the support portion and offset vertically above the engine, the pair of traction controllers in communication with the pair of drive controls; a first electric wheel motor connected to and controlled by one of the pair of traction controllers, the first electric wheel motor disposed on one side of the operator; a first driven wheel disposed adjacent the rear of the frame and engaged to and driven by the first electric wheel motor; a second electric wheel motor connected to the battery and connected to and controlled by the other of the pair of traction controllers, the second electric wheel motor disposed on a second side of the operator platform; and a second driven wheel disposed adjacent the rear of the frame and engaged to and driven by the second electric wheel motor. 2. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electrical generating device comprises an alternator. 3. The vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a pair of caster wheel assemblies mounted to the frame adjacent to the front end thereof and a pair of electrical actuators, each of the pair of electrical actuators engaged to one of the pair of caster wheel assemblies and to one of the pair of traction controllers. 4. The vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a pair of caster wheel assemblies mounted to the frame adjacent to the front end thereof. 5. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the pair of drive controls comprises a pair of drive levers. 6. A vehicle, comprising: an internal combustion engine supported on a frame, the frame having a front end and a rear end; a first driven wheel disposed adjacent the rear of the frame and a second driven wheel disposed adjacent the rear of the frame; an operator platform disposed on the frame adjacent to the rear end of the frame, configured to permit an operator to stand on the vehicle during operation of the vehicle; at least one electrical generating device driven by the internal combustion engine for generating electrical power, the at least one electrical generating device being connected to a battery disposed on the vehicle; a drive control mechanism for controlling speed and direction of the vehicle; at least one traction controller disposed on the vehicle and in communication with the drive control mechanism; and at least one electric drive disposed on the vehicle and connected to and controlled by the at least one traction controller, the at least one electric drive connected to and driving at least one of the first driven wheel and the second driven wheel. 7. The vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the at least one electrical generating device comprises an alternator. 8. The vehicle of claim 6 , further comprising an upright riser disposed on the frame and having a rear surface providing a support portion for the operator, and a front surface opposite to the rear surface, wherein the drive control mechanism is disposed on the upright riser and the at least one traction controller is disposed on the front surface of the upright riser generally opposite to the support portion and offset vertically above the engine. 9. The vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the at least one traction controller comprises a pair of traction controllers, each of the pair of traction controllers being disposed on the front surface of the upright riser generally opposite to the support portion and offset vertically above the engine. 10. The vehicle of claim 9 , further comprising a pair of caster wheel assemblies mounted to the frame adjacent to the front end thereof. 11. The vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the at least one electrical generating device comprises an alternator. 12. The vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the at least one electric drive comprises a first electric transaxle engaged to and driving the first driven wheel and a second electric transaxle engaged to and driving the second driven wheel. 13. The vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the at least one electric drive comprises a first electric wheel motor engaged to and driving the first driven wheel and a second electric wheel motor engaged to and driving the second driven wheel. 14. The vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the at least one traction controller comprises a pair of traction controllers. 15. The vehicle of claim 14 , further comprising a pair of caster wheel assemblies mounted to the frame adjacent to the front end thereof and a pair of electrical actuators, each of the pair of electrical actuators engaged to one of the pair of caster wheel assemblies to one of the pair of traction controllers.
