Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A football helmet includes a plastic shell with side regions having an ear flap with a face guard connector, an ear opening, a slot, and a snap connector. The helmet also includes an internal padding assembly removably connected to the plastic shell and including a jaw pad with a force attenuating layer. When the helmet is worn, a front edge of the jaw pad is positioned both in front of a coronal plane and below a basic plane of a head of the helmet wearer. A chin strap assembly releasably secures the helmet to the wearer and includes a lower flexible strap extending outwardly from each side of a central protective member. When the helmet is worn, an extent of the lower flexible strap is received by the slot when said strap is affixed to the snap connector. The shell also includes a raised central band integrally formed as part of the shell and extending across the crown region to the rear region. An arrangement of elongated vent openings flank the raised central band.

What is claimed is: 1. A football helmet comprising: a plastic shell configured to receive a head of a wearer of the helmet, the shell having: a front region, a rear region, and two side regions wherein each side region has an ear flap, each ear flap having: a lateral face guard connector, an ear opening having a non-circular configuration provided by an upper edge, a lower edge, and at least one side edge, a slot positioned rearward of the lateral face guard connector, wherein an uppermost point of the slot is positioned below an uppermost point of the upper edge of the ear opening, and a snap connector positioned below the upper edge of the ear opening; an internal padding assembly removably connected to the plastic shell, the padding assembly including a jaw pad; a chin strap assembly that releasably secures the helmet to the wearer, the chin strap assembly having a central member and a lower flexible strap extending outwardly from each side of the central member; and wherein when the helmet is worn by a wearer, a front edge of the jaw pad is positioned both in front of a coronal plane and below a basic plane of a head of the wearer, and an extent of the lower flexible strap is capable of being received by the slot when said strap is affixed to the snap connector. 2. The football helmet of claim 1 , wherein each ear flap has a second snap connector positioned above the lateral face guard connector, the second snap connector adapted to releasably engage an upper flexible strap extending outwardly from the central member of the chin strap assembly. 3. The football helmet of claim 2 , wherein the lateral face guard connector is removably connected to the shell by an elongated fastener that extends through the connector and into the shell, said fastener is positioned below the uppermost point of the upper edge of the ear opening, when the helmet is worn by the wearer. 4. The football helmet of claim 2 , wherein when the upper strap is engaged by the second snap connector, an extent of the upper strap is positioned between the shell and a face guard attached to the shell. 5. The football helmet of claim 4 , wherein when the helmet is worn by a wearer, the lower flexible strap is capable of being positioned such that a first portion of the lower flexible strap is positioned within the shell, a second portion of the lower flexible strap is received by the slot, and a third portion of the lower flexible strap is positioned external to the shell. 6. The football helmet of claim 1 , wherein the slot has a major axis and a minor axis and wherein the major axis is not substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the shell. 7. The football helmet of claim 1 , wherein each ear flap has an integral jaw flap that extends forward from the ear flap towards the front region of the shell, and wherein when the helmet is worn by a wearer, the jaw flap overlies an extent of the wearer's lower mandible. 8. The football helmet of claim 1 , wherein the jaw pad has a substantially linear front edge extending upward from a substantially linear lower edge of the jaw pad. 9. The football helmet of claim 8 , wherein the front edge of the jaw pad intersects the lower edge of the jaw pad to define an angle that is at least 90 degrees. 10. The football helmet of claim 1 , the helmet further comprising a face guard secured to the shell by an arrangement of face guard connectors, said arrangement of face guard connectors includes the lateral face guard connector and a frontal face guard connector removably coupled to the front region of the shell. 11. The football helmet of claim 1 , wherein the jaw pad has a force attenuating layer and a comfort layer, and wherein the force attenuating layer is positioned between the comfort layer and an inner surface of the shell. 12. The football helmet of claim 11 , wherein the force attenuating layer of the jaw pad has a density of at least 5 pounds per cubic foot and at least a 25% compression deflection of 8 pounds per square inch per the ASTM D-1056 standard. 13. A football helmet comprising: a one-piece plastic shell configured to receive a head of a wearer of the football helmet, the shell having: a front region, a crown region, a rear region, two side regions wherein each side region has an ear flap with an ear opening defined by a non-circular edge, a raised central band extending across the crown region to the rear region, the raised central band having a width defined by opposed side walls that extend transversely from an outer surface of the shell, wherein said width of the raised central band varies as the raised central band extends from the crown region toward the rear region, a first plurality of elongated vent openings in the shell, wherein said first plurality of vent openings are positioned beyond the raised central band and are substantially adjacent to a first side of the raised central band, a second plurality of elongated vent openings in the shell, wherein said second plurality of vent openings are positioned beyond the raised central band and are substantially adjacent to a second side of the raised central band; a face guard secured to the shell by at least two face guard connectors; and, a chin strap assembly that releasably secures the helmet to the wearer. 14. The football helmet of claim 13 , wherein the ear flaps and a frontal edge of the front region define a frontal opening in the shell, wherein the raised central band is integrally formed as part of the shell and commences a distance from the frontal edge. 15. The football helmet of claim 13 , wherein the shell has a frontal face guard connection component for securement of an upper, frontal portion of the face guard, the frontal face guard connection component defining a height and a width, and wherein the first and second plurality of vent openings each include a first vent opening, and wherein the distance between outer edges of the first vent openings exceeds the width of the frontal face guard connection component. 16. The football helmet of claim 13 , wherein the shell has a substantially uniform thickness along a lateral cross-section including the two side regions and the crown region. 17. The football helmet of claim 13 , wherein a front extent of the opposed side walls do not converge. 18. The football helmet of claim 13 , further comprising an internal pad assembly coupled to an inner surface of the shell, the internal pad assembly including a crown pad disposed in the crown region adjacent the inner shell wall surface, said crown pad has an irregular outer periphery comprised of an arrangement of projections and recesses, wherein the outer periphery does not fully obstruct any vent included within first or second plurality of vent openings. 19.
