Compounds, powders, and cathode active materials that can be used in lithium ion batteries are described herein. Methods of making such compounds, powders, and cathode active materials are described.

We claim: 1. A compound represented by Formula (III): Li α Co 1−x M x Al γ O δ (III) wherein: M is Mn, 0.95≤α≤1.10, 0<x<0.08, 0<γ≤0.05, and 1.95≤δ≤2.60. 2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.01≤γ≤0.03. 3. The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.02≤γ≤0.03. 4. The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.002≤γ≤0.004. 5. The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.001≤γ≤0.005. 6. The compound of claim 1 , wherein Al is in an amount of at least 2000 ppm. 7. The compound of claim 1 , wherein Al is in an amount of at least 900 ppm. 8. The compound of claim 1 , wherein Al is in an amount of at least 500 ppm. 9. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound has an R 3 m crystal. 10. The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.95≤α≤1.00.
