Official abstract text for this publication.
A write head including a bearing surface and a write pole having a front surface that forms a portion of the bearing surface. The front surface has a leading edge, a trailing edge and side edges connecting the leading and trailing edges. The write head also includes side shields proximate to the side edges of the write pole, and a trailing shield over the write pole and the side shields. A trailing shield-write pole gap is present between the trailing edge and the trailing shield, and a trailing shield-side shield gap is present between the trailing shield and the side shields. The trailing shield side shield gap is substantially less than the trailing shield-write pole gap.

What is claimed is: 1. An apparatus comprising: a bearing surface; a write pole having a front surface that forms a portion of the bearing surface, the front surface having a leading edge and a trailing edge, the write pole further comprising side edges connecting the leading edge to the trailing edge at the bearing surface; side shields proximate to the side edges of the write pole; a trailing shield over the write pole and the side shields; a trailing shield-write pole gap between the trailing edge of the write pole and the trailing shield; and a trailing shield-side shield gap between the trailing shield and the side shields, the trailing shield-side shield gap being substantially less that the trailing shield-write pole gap, the trailing shield-side shield gap comprises a single layer comprising a first material, the trailer shield-write pole gap comprises multiple layers with at least one of the multiple layers comprising the first material, the multiple layers comprising: a first thin metal layer; an insulation layer; and a second thin metal layer. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 and wherein the trailing edge of the write pole and upper surfaces of the side shields are substantially flush, and wherein portions of the trailing shield over the side shields are at a lower level than a level of a portion of the trailing shield that is above the write pole. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 and wherein the trailing edge of the write pole is at a lower level than a level of upper surfaces of the side shields. 4. The apparatus of claim 3 and wherein portions of the trailing shield over the side shields are at a lower level than a level of a portion of the trailing shield that is above the write pole. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 and wherein the trailing edge of the write pole is at a higher level than a level of upper surfaces of the side shields. 6. The apparatus of claim 5 and wherein the trailing edge of the write pole is at a higher level than a level of lower surfaces of portions of the trailing shield that are most proximate to the upper surfaces of the side shields. 7. The apparatus of claim 1 and wherein each of the side shields comprises a main side shield layer and a low saturation magnetization layer that has a saturation magnetization value that is less than a saturation magnetization value of the main side shield layer, and wherein the low saturation magnetization layer is adjacent to the trailing shield-side shield gap. 8. A write head comprising: a bearing surface; a write pole; side shields for the write pole; a trailing shield over the write pole and the side shields; and a trailing shield gap having a first portion between the trailing shield and the write pole and a second portion between the trailing shield and the side shields, the first portion of the trailing shield gap being thicker than the second portion of the trailing shield gap, the second portion of the trailing shield gap comprising a single layer having a first material, and the first portion of the trailing shield gap comprising multiple layers with a least one of the multiple layers comprising the first material, the multiple layers comprising: a first thin metal layer; an insulation layer; and a second thin metal layer. 9. The write head of claim 8 and wherein each of the side shields comprises a main side shield layer and a low saturation magnetization layer that has a saturation magnetization value that is less than a saturation magnetization value of the main side shield layer, and wherein the low saturation magnetization layer is adjacent to the second portion of the trailing shield gap.
